I can wire a plug, yes!!! I also had to buy a new hard drive last year when mine died on me. My brother told me what sort to buy and I even managed to fit it myself because I just took the old one out and replaced it exactly with the new one. But I wouldn't know how to add anything without instructions. I'll let you know how I get on!

However, some sites may say you have to buy the core hardware items as above, but there is no actual licence requirement to do so anymore.

I bought windows oem xp home from amazon, with no hardware for £60. Reformatted the hard drive, and bob's your uncle, it's worked.

I had exactly the same issue as you do, illegal copy of win xp professional.

Err...your referring to the System Builder Licence, which refers to supplying Windows OEM *WITH* a complete computer.
Here we are just talking about buying the software only with a peripheral device:

    OEM OS sold separately.

Another way in which a user can obtain an OEM copy of Windows is by simply purchasing it from a vendor. The vendor must still follow the “sellers” EULA when selling a single copy of the OS. The EULA states the vendor must sell the OS bundled with a “non-peripheral component” that is “essential” to running the PC. Microsoft has a FAQ on this as well:

Quoted from Microsoft's OEM Builder FAQs:

"Q. The current System Builder license states that I may distribute an operating system license with a "non-peripheral hardware component". What hardware components are considered "non-peripheral"?

    A. A non-peripheral hardware component is a hardware component that is considered to be essential to running a computer system, and includes components such as memory, internal devices and drives, mice, keyboards, and power supplies. Examples of components that are not considered essential are external modems, networking devices, cameras, printers, and scanners. "

And in post 10 you said
"Question - can you wire a plug?
If so you are over qualified to build a pc or upgrade one!!!!"

Werent you refering to the person being over qualified to be a system builder?????

And just to clear things up... Here is a link to OEM license question being asked..

    and I quote

Q Can I buy OEM Windows XP software with a mouse?
A No, OEM desktop software must be pre-installed on a fully assembled PC

    http://www.microsoft.com/uk/licensing/faq/default.mspx#EBJAC

    Also

    http://www.microsoft.com/uk/licensing/introduction/hometools/default.mspx

Must come on preinstalled system if you are refering to the NON system builder License

Could you please post a link to your "Microsoft's OEM Builder FAQs" I can find no passage on Microsoft.com that says anything like what you quoted..

I have been given a computer from a friend who no longer wants it. Its nothing special but will be ideal for my daughter in her bedroom. Thing is, it has come with Windows XP Professional but a copied version, which of course is illegal. I would like to buy the proper, legal Windows XP Home for it instead but do I need to buy the full package or can I buy an upgrade?

If it aint broke don't fix it. ;)

At some point I will have to format this computer - my daughter is always downloading and ends up with rubbish on her computer and possibly viruses. I need the OS for when I do this.
