hi everyone this is my first post on this thread. I am very glad I found it as I am quite an erratic novice cook! Stewed some bramley cooking apples yesterday and put too much water in - it hasn't thickened at all and I now have 2 bowls of green gloop with pulp at the bottom in my fridge. Any ideas for a rescue? Tried it in porridge this morning and it was a wonder I made it into work it was so disgusting! any help much appreciated. kitty.0

All I can come up with so far is add more Bramleys... You might end up with a great deal of apple sauce but it will freeze.
You can search the internet for apple sauce recipes such as Apple Sauce cake though you might have to use the sediment rather than the top part of the gloop.
Rhubarb easily goes the same way so I am hoping someone inventive will have an answer: most of us who've ever stewed fruit will have come across something similar, I daresay! And somewhere out there is someone with an ingenious idea.Miggy

I've thought on a bit... if it's so bad it won't go in porridge, can you use muslin or a clean tea towel stretched over a jug (secured with a strong elastic band or similar) and pour on the sauce to let it strain through? The wateriest part should stay in the jug and the thick part will stay on the cloth. You can then use it as normal, though it will take a while and you may have to do it in several sessions to get it all in.
ETA - Google for 'straining fruit' or 'Fruit jellies' and you will see there are videos that show how to do this.Miggy

I have only just started reading this part of MSE and I am so glad I did. I admit I am always wasting food and its time I got my act together. This thread motivated me after reading it yesterday.
This morning I sorted out my cupboards and fridge and the stuff I have had to throw out because its out of date is nothing short of scandalous.
Bag of sunflower seeds and a large chunk of Stilton (not entirely wasted, I put it all out for the birds)
Half tub of Philly
2 instant chocolate drinks
Coffee Mate
Full pack of caster sugar
Tabasco sauce.. never used
Mustard
Vinegar
Half bottle virgin olive oil and one of ordinary olive oil
6 Kiwi fruit
1 apple
Fill pack pilau rice
Tinned mixed beans
Nearly full pack of pudding rice
Homepride sweet and sour sauce
Tin of Birds custard
3/4 pack penne pasta
Full jar homemade apple chutney
Jar of mincemeat
Pack of bread mix
Colmans cheese sauce
Tin of celery hearts
2x Baxters soup
Tin of gooseberries.....
and a pack (except for one) Asda Chosen By You Cappuccinos. These were not out of date, I only bought them on Saturday but they are absolutely disgusting. I dont know who "chooses" them. They didnt even taste of coffee. They tasted of weak chalky cheap chocolate.
I havent even started on the freezer yet.
I always throw leftovers out.
Chicken, the sunday roast, veg. You name it...it goes in the bin.
Right... I have admitted it and am going to change my ways. I will be following this thread closely.
Many thanks to all you thrifty people.0 -
Noooooo! Don't throw these out!

Mustard

3/4 pack penne pasta
Jar of mincemeat

Colmans cheese sauce
Most of these are fairly un-perishable...and tbh most of the others I'd use, too!!!!!!0 -
Hi Miggy, what about putting it back on the heat and simmering until it reduces? May save it, alternatively, add sugar or sugar substitute, whipped egg white and freeze and eat as an apple sorbet. Don't forget pregnant women have to avoid due to raw egg. Just a thought.

They have gone now but I am seriously going to change my ways.
I am going to buy an extra freezer and keep it in the garage. I have even been known to throw stuff out of the freezer to make room for new...:o how pathetic is that?
One more thing.... I am not going to buy any more Asda "28 Day Matured" rump steak like I have been doing. I picked the biggest last week at a cost of £7.50 for one steak. I dont eat it but my husband enjoys it though he did ask me not to buy such a large one again as he struggled to finish it.
I am so inspired by this thread and others in Old Style Money Saving..... I am on a mission now.0 -
Hi Luckyred, good luck with your changes. Only advice I can give:
Sort your freezer and record the contents
Sort larder and record the contents
Use both to menu plan and take your shopping list
Batch cook and freeze and the you never have to worry about having a meal ready
Hope all goes well and believe me, it saves a fortune.

Thanks Tilly. I do menu planning, always have (sort of) and used to batch cook sometimes when kids were at home but dont bother now its just the two of us. I am going to start doing it again though. That is part of the reason for getting an extra freezer.
I am also going to have a look in Aldi and try a few things.
I dare not mention how much I spend on food. Its been going on for too long now. The excuse was always.... I am a career woman, I dont have time to think about being economical and anyway I work hard, I can afford it...... what a load of rubbish! Lots of us are/were career women so its no excuse!0
