... So tubs of humous get portioned up into mini tupperware and frozen immediately so I can take one out at a time rather than eating half then finding it had grown a new life form a week later. ...

I didn't know you could freeze humous. I live on my own so often half of it is past its best before I can use it up. I shall be pinching your idea, thank you :T

I've been struggling for the last few months with a too-small freezer so haven't been able to batch cook or freeze leftovers, bread, fresh veg etc. I've been throwing away loads of food  that normally I'd portion and freeze so I've just bought a small chest freezer and next month should do better. I'm aiming to throw only veg peelings out - after I've used what I can for stock of course :D Sadly I don't have any outdoor space so no composting for me
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

  • We're pretty good about most things. We don't eat much bread so I only ever buy sliced or single portions like muffins which go in the freezer and get toasted as needed. Any spare veg get made into soup which OH takes for lunch. My downfall is fruit:o but I'm blaming this partly on the veg stall in our local market. They sell most fruit things as a some many for a pound but they can't count:p So plums 10 for a pound - Oh has taken two a day to work, that's 8, I've had about 4 and I've just thrown one away that was going mouldy so that's thirteen and there's still four left! I've tried buying half measures but I still get way more than I need and I don't want to upset them by complaining as we are obviously good customers and get loads of freebies and discounts. (I always buy for our staffroom at school and a load for my neighbour as well)
Anyway my this week's resolution is to unpack everything on Saturday and work out exactly what we will eat (this still equals the average amount for a family of six although there's only two of us, OH is a fruit bat) and transfer all the surplus to my neighbours bag as she has growing boys.:D
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D

    Hello all,

I'm going to join in with this as well.

I will say that I don't think I throw alot away but we shall see :o:D

That said, :o being as we are starting today, I have just put two casseroles in the oven to freeze in portions for later and whilst doing that I chucked a quarter of a red cabbage away. This was home grown on the allotment, but I shall pretend I had bought it. :D

According to my supemarket a red cabbage is 55p in Tesco, so I'll say 15p thrown away today.

    Great idea :T
  • Thanks Squeaky for reviving this. I have to say i don't throw much, but I am sat in my sitting room, surrounded by boxes of food as i am having a new kitchen installed, tempted to dump loads. I think i am going to get myself a box/container and put stuff in that, which i want to use first and see how i go, also i am going to add it up for the week, not necessarily how much it cost, as i buy lots cheap, but how much it would cost, had it not had a 10p sticker on. I am going to set myself a challenge for the month of £5 and hope not to throw more than that away. I have some slightly limp rocket salad in the fridge, which I am now going to put in with my stirfry later.

:o:o:o goes off mumbling a thousand excuses like had not woke up yet blah blah blah :rotfl:

the thread made me clean out my fridge and I need to add half a cucumber to the list least it was on the 39p offer at aldi but still next time I'll be giving to kids cucumber sticks for their lunch instead of just letting it linger

edited to ask - stock bins - how/where do you keep them? and roughly how much veg peelings do you use for it?

I'm a bit like Rising from the Ashes - single but with a dog hoover!
I do tend to buy too much fresh stuff despite meal planning. There's often a mangy banana or mouldy satsuma going in the bin.

I've just checked the fridge and the only thing that needs chucking is a quarter of a punnet of grapes that have gone a bit squishy. I've just had scrambled eggs on toast (bread from the freezer) to use up some eggs that have a date of tomorrow on them (still a few left but will use them up in the next few days).

I've just had to chuck half a tin of dog food out too - the dog refuses to eat it (must be yukky if he won't eat it). I have another tin of it but will take it back and hopefully swap it for the flavour he does like.

This had made me look again at my shopping list for the weekend and reassess whether I really will use it before it goes off.

I generally find things freeze better in the freezer!!! ;)

Great thread idea though. My worst sin is probably veg that gets put into the fridge drawers, it keeps for ages but does sometimes get overlooked (as they are very big deep drawers) and sometimes I find some that is WELL past it's useful life!!!
