The flat was built in the 1930's. It sounded like a steel material0

Got a magnet, come on chap, think outside of the box

At that age if it is steel then it is an RSJ or a simple Rolled steel angle.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
it may just be concrete
i think you didnt have a proper drill.
maybe try again with a better drill ?
hope this helps.0 -
Just Gripfill/No More Nails etc a batten to the wall/window reveal and screw the brackets to that.0

You don't say but blinds are normally fitted inside the window reveal.
If these are minature venitian blinds, the brackets can usually be screwed to the wall rather than up into the lintel.
Also sometimes even possible to fix directly to the window frame.
OP go back up and read this post again - great advice!0 -
Concrete lintels often contain steel reinforcement .Forgotten but not gone.0

Thanks guys for all advice.
Just a question on lintels how big are they generally just so I have a better idea for next time.0 -
I had exactly the same problem just a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't drill deeper than around 3cm no matter what I tried. However, I didn't want to put the curtain pole higher so I cut a Rawl plug down to a shorter length and used shorter screws. I was just fitting voiles so the strength of the fixing wasn't really an issue for me, but it may be for you.Everyone is entitled to my opinion!0
