How Much To Rewire?

We finally moved back in December and knew the house needed rewiring.
We budgeted for about 4k to 5k and our first quote has come back as £7k!!!!!
Anybody had a 4 bed detached house rewired and how much did it cost??

seriously 7k for a rewire seems a lot but it all depends on were you are .Also what is being done,
If you are littering the house with spot lights and want garden lighting and power then the bill will creep up.
Most sparks work out quotes based on a price per point so ask your self if you need all the points you have asked for.

Ours is in the final stages of being done and will cost nearly £7k for a big 3 bed detached.

That is probably on the high side at first glance so the following may be relevant - firstly its solid floors downstairs and all solid walls (even the internal ones) so all the wires for downstairs sockets have to be channelled into the walls. For a 3 bed its also a pretty big house - the smallest bedroom in here is as big as the biggest in our old house! We've also added a few luxuries as we go along as we intend to be here long term and want to get it right now rather than have to add things later - things like extra outside lights, interlinked smoke/heat detectors, and also extra circuits laid in ready, in case we do the extension we have talked about. It was also quoted based on known brand materials with each part listed and priced so we know we aren't getting rubbish. We've also asked them to try to preserve the plaster coving which they have done despite having to get wires down behind them.

Having been given a fixed quote its actually going to take them at least 5 extra man days to finish which won't be chargeable.

The evening weekend quote sounds like someone moonlighting to me - hence he can charge less as he's not making his main living from it. I'd be wary of that in case it goes wrong and you have no comeback.

If you have little ones (as we do) I'd seriously consider moving out if you can as its very noisy, very messy and often unsafe to wander around the house. Plus if they don't have to put all the floors down and try to keep power going everynight they can get finished quicker. Obviously that would add to the cost of the project unless you can find a friend you can housesit for while they are away perhaps!

  • If the guy is moonlighting and you go with him you only have yourself to blame if it goes wrong. Look at the NICEIC website as anyone carrying out a re-wire must be registered. There are certain regulations that he must follow. The work is also notifiable. £7k seems a bit excessive, and not all electricians charge per point.
    Does this figure include vat?
PM me and let me know which area you are in, if you are near me, I will give you same names of some decent guys.
CUT OFF DATE FOR XMAS 2008 1st NOV
    PB £17.87, Ipoints 3907, QUIDCO £217.94,
    SHOP&SCAN 1950, LITESPEED 1265,PINECONE £8,
    BOOTS £18.62, IPSOS 1190, VALUED OPINIONS £19.25,
MISC SURVEYS CLICK THROUGH ACCS ETC £23,
  • I had a quote recently as moved into new house in October and knew rewiring was required soonish. Electrician quoted me £2500, said it would take about a week, and best thign would be if we could be out of the office during that week.
  • Should move down south. I am starting a rewire in just under 2 weeks. It is a bit awkward- part flat roof, all concrete floors.

Total price is £2000. (pensioner - so it's cheaper)
this includes smoke detector, bonding, certification etc, and leaving place easy to add conservatory electrics.

Should take about a week, all going well.
    baldly going on...

We are in Caterham Surrey.I am getting really worried that it will be all too messy. It needs doing and we cannot move out as have no family or friends in area.Help!!!
  • trying not to cheer you up too much, but if your house is solid walls it is really messy.

We use a wall chaser (saw with hoover attachment to cut channels) with a hoover attachment, which helps, but we also need to use a grinder- which is messy.

Grinder & wall chaser = less disturbance to wall= easier lifer for plasterer=cheaper plastering for you :D
