Friday Morning
Last Friday shortly after 10am I went to my local Halifax branch with a substantial cheque which I was putting into one of my daughter's accounts.
I had a list of her accounts with me, and showed them to one of the assistants. I asked the question - into which of these three accounts should this cheque go, in order for it to clear the quickest? I was advised which account, and was told it would take up to a week, at which point I deposited the cheque. I have to admit that I was astonished that in this day and age a cheque should take so long to clear.
However, here we are one week later, and after having been on-line to check her account we find that the cheque still has not cleared for the funds to be transferred into an interest bearing account.
This is an absolute disgrace.
Martin - are you able to bring any pressure to bear on these institutions who must be making a great deal of money out people like us?

I think Halifax bank is a total disgrace in general, ive had many a run in with them, I find them unhelpful and brash, We have our mortgage with them and if i could change to any other bank I would do it today  if i knew then what i know now, i would never have stepped through the door.Nobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission

Hi Rushnowt...I used to have my mortgage with Halifax. When I was moving house I went in and asked them what they could offer me with regard to beating their competitors and therefore keep my custom. Answer was zilch. What dimwits! The best of it was that I could afford to move because I had received a load of shares from them when they floated...so bless them, they financed my moving expenses and then lost my custom for the remaining term of my mortgage...that was 18 years worth of interest they turned their noses up at...
I have a copy of Martin's remortgaging book - if you'd like it please PM me and I'll pop it in the post to you.

For the last year I have been with a fight with the Halifax regarding my Visa!
I have a standinbg order to pay off the credit card every month on the first of every month, as I told the Halifax this was when i got paid, and when the money could go in.
Now practically every other month I get a late charge, as they demand the money between the 28th and 1st of the month, instead of the 1st - 4th (apparently these are the dates they request the money)and if it 'looks' to see if teh money has hit the account on 28th - 31st of the month it will see it has not, and yes, thats it 25 pound fine for me, over the last year I have had about 6 of these! And have spent ages trying to get it sorted, but they just do not want to know! When I pointed out to them it was them who said the set up i requested was OK, they say 'that person has left so we cannot ask them' and they said thy will pay HALF of ONE months charges as goodwill!
Even though I am a 'late payer' they have just upped my limit from 5k to 10200k! I find them so infuriating!
What makes it worse, you cannot fight these people, or withhold payment, as you just end up worse off.

Feel better now.

Thanks SnowyOwl,
How very kind of you but im not in a position to need it at the mo, we've moved into another house now and our other home is up for sale so i will be rid of them for good when that sells, I'd never use the Halifax for any of my banking again
We did try to move to a different bank some years ago but they had us tied in knots and the penalties where unbeleivable so we just excepted it and plodded on.
I'll never do that again and because of their attitude, they dont have the pleasure of making even more money out of me from my business and personal accountsNobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission

I did until 2 weeks ago love the Halifax. I have Current account, ISA, internet savings with them. While on line banking I noticed that a bill payment/ac transfer to a family member had disappeared so I rang the number on the screen to find out where it was. They asked me for my telephone banking password. As I haven't used this service for over 3 years I didn't know it. No problem we will put you through to security and they will check you out. Lovely chap asked me 6 questions which I answered no problem. Then he asked me for my password - doh that was why I was speaking to him I couldn't remember it. Sorry he said he couldn't reset it or talk to me about it anymore. Will you write to me to reset the password I asked. No. So how do I use the telephone banking service and resolve my query. You can't he said. Well that was helpful:mad:

I opened up a Regular saver last month. I was annoyed that I couldn't take in a form to fill in and bring back in my own time. Anyway, booked an appointment and I had to use my credit card bill as one form of id. BIG MISTAKE!!! She was really nosey and asking what the apr etc and going on how great her Halifax card was. I came here for my savings, not a bloody cc. Anyway, I mention casually that I applied and got declined. After a long time applying for this savings account she tells me "it's gone through"? What has? She went and applied for a credit card on my behalf! I didn't want to sign the form (which was prob the agreement) but she mentioned how it would be easier to cancel if I did (I'm too easy)
I'm going to say no more because ppl have pushed me around too much.
Yeah, so Halifax smells. Won't step foot in there until next year.Lurker extraordinaire! no. 4950

we had fun with the halifax last week.
I noticed that a DD had been taken for about twice what it should have been, so I called the telephone banking service and was told to just pop into a branch and fill out a DD indemnity form. Do off we went and were greeted by a guy behind the counter wearing jeans and sweater, who told us that wewould have to make an appontment, for about an hour and a half later. We asked if it could be earlier,(grouchy young baby with us on a cold day etc), and were then told actually can't do it today as lady who fills in forms was going home early!!!
We then had to make an apppointment for the next day at a branch 20 miles from where we live, as we were informed that nobody would be able to do it at the local branch on a saturday.
If it had been a small amount I would probably by this time had made the odd finger gesture and told them to stick it, but we were fighting to get back £82.50.
Anyway turn up at branch next day and was asked why we had gone there and why did we make a 15min appointment to reclaim DD!!!
because the idiots in the other branch don't know what they are doing we repled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another thing with the halifax is the number of shops that have problems with their debit cards. Is this just our local area or does anyone else have them same?
And why can't you just fill in a form to apply for a new account, is this the same for all banks now? I don't want to make an appointment to open a savings account and have someone try to sell me other products:mad:0 -
Similar happened to me at The Great Trade Centre in NW London (car supermarket). I went to ask about their finance deal, got all the details for my exact circumstances and signed nothing saying I'd have to think about it. I had picked a car I wanted, so a few days later I returned to pay by banker's draft and pick the car up. The salesman ushered me into the finance bloke's office and he proudly announced that "the money was there waiting for me". He'd done exactly as that Halifax woman and applied for a loan on my behalf without my permission. I was totally dumbfounded!!
Oops sorry, that was nothing to do with the Halifax but I felt like having a prattle. Sorry!0
