Is this a paypal scammer thing?

I received the following in my inbox this morning and was wondering if it is a scam. I was addressed by name in it but am always dubious of emails which ask for details. Anyone else come across it who can comment on it?

To make sure, I logged into my account and was met with different details to that in the email. One does hear about websites being hacked into and changed. With this doubt, I have decided against entering any details.

The only things I have changed are my name and the links have been deleted just in case they are not ligitimate.

Update account information

Please provide further information
Dear Mr xxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
We need to confirm some of your account information or collect further
information. Please complete this by 24/01/2012. If you don't do so in
time, PayPal is required by EU regulations to limit access to your account.

What should I do?

The next time you log in to your PayPal account you’ll be guided through
a process to collect the necessary information.

Why is this required?

EU law requires financial services firms like PayPal to validate the
identity
of all our customers so as to provide a safer platform for our users and to
help prevent the illegal use of our services. Thank you for your
co-operation.
Yours sincerely,
PayPal

Looks legit as it asks you to log in safely- rather than send you a link to do so.

The email is also the standard verification process one. You need to follow the requirements showing when you log into your paypal account otherwise in about a week your account will be suspended until you comply.

Um, this is neither an email from a Nigerian scammer nor probably a fake.

Thanks. The site had a different date on it to the email sent though, which is not good.

Is it because the time zone on the Paypal server is different to the one on your email server or client?

The e-mail that I received had a differnet deadline date (January 2012) to that displayed when I logged into the site, it had December 2011 on it - I didn't click the link in the e-mail as was dubious about the sender as you would have read in the opening post.

Imagine the grief for some if people who did not use the internet very often or away finding this and then not having their money in their accounts.

I also received that email twice! I'm not opening either because they were both delivered to the junk folder. I intend to go straight to my paypal account, if there are any issues that need addressing they will be on there.

I have had the same emails on more than one occasion, they are complete SCAMS, do NOT open them, mark them as phishing scams!!
  • Forward them to spoof@paypal.com and if it's not fake they will email you back. I've not had a Paypal phishing email for ages, but in the past they have replied to me telling me that the email I forwarded was fake so you might be confirmation of that too (assuming they still do this).

    It's only a game

Anything you send to paypal is returned as a phish- even legit emails.
