Disadvantages of End Terraced House

I've seen a lot of end terraced houses up for sale recently in my area and was wondering what the main reason why the occupants are selling them. Is it heat loss?

That and possible subsidence as theres no house on the other side to support yours. Plus an extra side that damp can get to.

How large are the terraces? are we talking 4 houses in a terrace or groups of 12 - 20?

I would understand the lack of appeal in a large terrace maybe due to potential issues with other houses in poor condition but a small terrace of 4 I wouldnt see an issue with.

    lol! I think it's just coincidence! :o

End of terrace properties are generally quite popular as you are in effect semi-detached, so half as much neighbour noise and access to your garden via the side passage. You don't generally pay too much more for them though :)

They will lose some heat from the sides but the vast majority is lost through the roof as heat rises. I also don't think you'd notice the difference unless you had a direct comparison.

Just a warning about the gap between the sets of terraces - if it's a wide gap, say big enough to drive a car down - then it can become a wind tunnel when storms come. My neighbour has the end terrace and always has storm damage to her fences in bad storms and it's not because of poor fencing. Her neighbour across the gap also suffers. It's probably a location thing, and to be honest I've always thought of end terraces as being the better buy, but would be a good idea to check the boundary fences.

  • End terraced homes are usually better value than mid terraced. Just like a semi is better than an end terrace. If your worried about wind tunnell issues check to see if the wall ties have been done recently. Fences can be more of pain but done correctly with concrete posts etc, should not be a problem.

The end terrace I bought had the local !!!!!! kids playing football against - it finished on the end of the street, no garden or any sort of buffer. Had to go the full asbo route which didn't even stop them. 3 years of thud thud hell, they didn't care and their parents were even worse. The number of times my bird had to restrain me from going out was incalculable, by the end I would have swung for them.

I live in an end-terrace in a 4 house block. I put my loudspeakers against the wall that`s not attached. The neighbours say that they can`t hear them at all. My house comes with a small front lawn, which the mid ones don`t have, and asking prices seem to be about £10,000 more than the mid-terrace ones.

depends on the house and area but end houses can have problems with teenagers gathering outside .

I've had this too.Although not as bad as you by the sounds. It's usually younger kids so a quick dose of verbal sorts it out. It's not happened that much over the past few years though, *touch wood*.Also, shortly after I moved in, NTL decided to put in a junction box/cabinet right by the side which the kids sometimes like to gather round and kick the hell out of.That can be quite annoying.

  • I can echo these sentiments, we lived for years in an end terrace and at times were plagued with kids kicking ball against the wall.

Also there was graffitti written on our side wall a few times and we were trying to sell the house at the time. The buyer lived in a similar area and it didn't put him off
