Sky cabling problem

Options
Moved my sky box to a new unit and something's gone wrong with one of the cables and am only getting one signal input. So can either, watch, record or playback. Sky want £65.00 for an engineer to call.

If i cancel and get my daughter to subscribe in her name would that work??

Both cables are the same so you cannot get them the wrong way round, unplug from wall and simply check the f connectors.

If using twin "shotgun" cable its very easy for the thin central core to bend over rather than go into the connector.

Yup,but more likely some of the copper braiding is touching the central core stinger, thus shorting out the LNB.Easy to do & quite hard to spot...
  • Thanks for all the replies but if we leave the cables the way they are we do get something to watch. If we switch them around then we get nothing - just message saying no signal being received.

As I said, you do not need to swap them around you need to fix the broken connector.

You don't need to get Sky in to refit a dodgy 'F' connector. If you really can't manage it (though you can) then any handyman can do it for a few pounds-it's no harder than wiring a plug.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It depend what you mean by "work".

They will certainly come out and give you a new box etc.

If they are in one of their income generation drives they will then afterwards state that she has previously benefited from Sky and so is not entitled to the discount and so have to pay the full £300 for the box and £65 for the installation. If they're not then you may "get away with it".

To have a reasonable chance of getting away with it she really will need to have a different surname and different bank details and naturally never have been a sky customer herself.

That said, if you've moved the box and now have the problem is it a simple thing to fix and not worth the risk.
