  • Hi,

If you find your self struggling to meet teh bills you can apply to hardship funds, every university has a fund. Ask the student union or student services. It can be in the form of extra studnet loans(pay back when your are earning after graduation) or in some cases grant.

Do you have to pay your parents rent to live at home? If not, thank your lucky stars!

If you do - try the access to learning fund...

My God! I wish my uni debt was only going to be £10k - it was that after less than 2 years - the joys of not living at home and not physically being able to get a job save for over the summer...

  • OVER £10k, the true figure will more than likely be more than 15k unless i can work something out.

My son manages on £3000 per year loan( 75% of maximum) living in a student house, I help with his fees (old system) and he has a job to pay for the rest. He runs a car (old banger paid for), dresses well and socialises with his friends. It is possible to manage on a low amount of money if your parents are letting you live rent free and you budget accordingly. I agree the bar is set too low though, many parents have lots of demands on their funds and can't really afford to contribute to uni costs, as it's a loan not a grant I think it's time they treated all students as independant adults. Some students would still get money rom thie family but at least they would all have a reasonable amount to live on.

I guess that's medicine for you! Can't take a term time job, as we are expected to do nights and weekends when our hospital firms are on call and take, and even when not, days tend to be from 7.30am til about 6 or 7 pm, plus an hours travel either way...

I get no parental support, and as I already have one degree I get no help with my fees at all, but as a 'mature' I do get a full loan - thankfully...
