I've never been quoted the 41 unit thing and I've disputed meter readings a lot. One nasty habit npower have when you move to them and ask them to correct an opening meter reading, they gladly amend it but never bother to tell your old supplier.
Some posters on the forum grumble about the myther for a few kwh & pence but every complaint upheld is worth at least £25.
In summary, ask for the opening meter readings you've just submitted online to avoid any shocks.

The switch reading has to be the same on both sides.

The agreed switch read is what both suppliers themselves pay.

So, if they lower it the other supplier pays for the energy and the new supplier gains 100% profit from you, if its not amended on bother sides. It would also cause you to pay both suppliers for energy that is purchased once.

If the new supplier raises it, they still pay the distributor and make a loss if not adjusting it on both sides. Not correcting it here can be seen as a cheaper alternative, you paid what you should, the old supplier payed one value and the new supplier takes it on the chin.
