Since both the opening and closing reads must agree, the fact that they're inaccurate only makes a difference if the two tariffs have a big price difference.
Whatever erroneous units you pay EDF for, you don't pay to SP-or vice versa.

• Not sure you have understood what I am saying macman. The readings do not agree and overlap by ~50 units, so I have been billed twice.
• ...and apparently opening and closing reads are allowed to differ (overlap or differ) by more than 250 units (ie more than £10) before anyone cares

The readings should agree unless the customer disputes the reading. In this instance, in electricity the amended reading is not put into settlements if the difference is less than 250 units. You should not be charge twice for the same fuel.

Please see comment by Spiro which explains what should happen. The 2 reads should agree, whether accurate or not.

Well of course they should (I hope) but the poster has already stated once and then had to correct your understanding of the post that the gaining and losing supplier readings are not the same but different "the readings do not agree and overlap by ~50 units, so I have been billed twice."

Unfortunately the year old Scottish Power rep comment says that is OK (but maybe was an answer to a different question).

So what is going on? There seems to be a lack of clarity how this situation should be handled (if one or other or both suppliers bungle the transfer readings).

Then the OP has grounds for a complaint, because the mismatch should not have been accepted.

Where a small mismatch occurs to the consumer's advantage, the supplier may elect not to change things. I've had this before with Scottish Power.

Where a mismatch occurs to the consumers disadvantage, and the supplier won't rectify matters, then I think a formal complaint is indeed the next step to resolution.

According to the post by the SP rep, he said he would, on request, ensure both old and new suppliers used the same reading and so avoid any reason for a formal complaint :).

I've just had the same thing - 50 units, so still only around £2, ...

You can only compare meter readings on old and new bills, (to ensure they are the same) not kWh which is presumably what you are trying to compare here with the old and new gas bills ;)

Not sure how you came to 50 kWh of gas difference though. About 45 or 55 kWh perhaps, but not 50

Hi ginga-ninga,

I can have a look at this for you just e-mail me at onlinecomplaints@scottishpower.com.

To clarify the process, the incoming supplier should give the old supplier a meter reading and both parties should end and begin on the same reading, these readings should never differ in any way.

The 250 units you refer to is the disputed thresholds, for example if both suppliers have the same reading but either party dispute the reading this can be disputed by providing back up readings. If this is less than 250 this cannot be raised.

Hope this clarifies this issue.
