  • It does sound like you might have got your renewal notice before they paid the claim if they are offering you 3 years NCB but I don't know how this would be as if the accident happened 2010 they would have known they would be liable. Assuming you took out the policy in 2008, you should have had 40% NCB (i.e 2 years) in 2010 which would increase to 3 years in 2011 in you had not had the accident. Sounds very much to me like you should actually be back at 0% based on receiving nothing for the current (i.e claim) year plus loss of 2 years penalty.

Reads to me that you had the accident in june 2010 and changed ins co in Nov 2010. You now have a renewal notice that says 3 years NCB. It seems you have either declared your NCB wrong in Nov when changing co's or you didn't lose any NCB for the 2010 claim so can claim 3 years.

As long as you have disclosed everything to your current insurance company, incuding : the incident, the third party claim and payout, then your current insurance company will send you a renewal notice which should show the NCD that you are entitled to.

However, if you failed to disclose something to your current insurer when you took out the policy, or if the payout has been made since you took out the policy and you have not informed them of this new information, then you need to contact them to update the information.

The OP has a decision to make, bearing in mind his current policy is about to expire.

If he has not disclosed the incident to his current insurer, and now does, then the least he faces is a big (backdated) premium increase!

i changed insurance companies in Nov 10. when i switched over i did mention that there was an accident but it has not yet been settled. accident happened in June 10 and the the claim was settled around June this year. i did not inform my current insurance company about the pay out. also i did not claim against damage to my own car

    1. what happens if i do not let the insurance company know that the claim had been settled?
    2. will i still have my 1 year ncb with my current insurance company?

    1) Probably nothing if you intend leaving them very shortly.

    2) You will have the NCB shown on your renewal notice.

All accidents and claims are recorded on a database now. Failing to disclose the correct information may
leave you with a huge bill or uninsured.

Problem then is you wont get a decent quote when you put you had a policy cancelled for failing to declare
material facts. Fail to mention you had a policy cancelled and your going to need a good quality and
a very big shovel to dig yourself out of that hole.

The new company maybe offering you a good quote with 3 years NCB but are very very expensive to drivers
    with zero no claims.

You told us that you had informed your current insurer about the incident when you first took out the policy, so no problem there regarding non disclosure.

You have had no notification from any insurer that your previous NCD has been rescinded, so you have nothing to report regarding NCD.

(Might be better to change insurers at renewal as you have your proof of your NCD)

If you had 1 yrs NCB, and someone hit you, so you claimed from there insurer (doing it yourself and telling my own insurer i was handling it myself), would you lose your NCB as you made a claim against the other side (all above board and other side admits liable, etc).... just curious as to how it works!
