hi,
for the past few weeks i have periodically had a problem where when i depress the clutch the rev counter goes way up. even when i just slow down with the brake, as soon as i go to change gear the rev counter goes high. so if i am say waiting at the lights, i put the car into 1st gear and obviously have to keep the clutch depressed but the car is revving away.
this problem just comes and goes for the past few weeks.
i would be grateful for any advice. otherwise i have no other problems with my car.
its a rover 400.
thanks
molly

Assuming the rev counter is indicating a high reading because the engine is actually running too fast, it could be a number of things.
A quick search on Google found the following (on http://www.carelect.demon.co.uk/rover.html) as suggestions for idle speed problems on the Rover 400:-"For idle speed problems, first check operation of throttle position switch, making sure throttle linkage is not catching on anything. Also check operation of idle valve and wiring. If both ok, then ECU is suspect. Wherever possible, carry out tests for induction side airleaks as these can also cause high idle speeds".I think you'll need to take the car to a mechanic to obtain a correct diagnosis. If you are lucky, the problem will be fairly easy to diagnose and repair, hopefully keeping the cost low.
