However generally, the more you pay, the more is spent on the actual wine (including the producers profit margin).
My favourite tip is the depth of the dip at the bottom of a bottle of wine, the deeper the dip the better the quality...
So if I want to sell a cheap wine to you at a high price, all I need to do is get a deeper dip in the bottle - sounds like an idea for MoneyMakingExpert.com !To infinity and beyond!0 -
Betty_Boop wrote:And the J.P Chenney Chardonnay is second to none at about £3.50 a bottle
BUT even here (for example) the price is misleading re the actual price of the wine.
Take off the duty of £1.22 and that leaves £2.28 a bottle.
We've bought this and all the other J.P.Chenney varieties in France for just a little more than ONE EURO. Perhaps €1.1 to €1.2
At the time that equalled between 72p and 79p a bottle.
So £1.50 is to ship a bottle across the channel and put it on a supermarket shelf this side. There are 10 types of people in the world. ‹(•¿•)›(11)A104.28S94.98O112.46N86.73D101.02(12)J130.63F126.76M134.38A200.98M156.30J95.56J102.85A175.93

Excise duty on wine is about 1.50 per bottle .....................!
Unless they have greatly reduced the complexity of HM Customs' Import Tariff in the last 3 years (which is extremely unlikely) the rate of excise would vary depending on whether it was white, red or sparkling, and also (as indicated by quoia) on what percentage alcohol it containsIt's actually £1.63 PER LITRE (Exceeding 5.5% - not exceeding 15% abv.)Thanks to all who post constructively.

I know someone mentioned this earlier but it runs out this week and you can still get 25% + another 10% when you buy 6 on all Aussie wines. I bough some yesterday including some Wolfblass, Rosemount and Lindemans. It averaged out at £3.33 per bottle.0

I was quite impressed with Somerfield's current deal 4 bottles for £10 RITMO Spannish wine. Both the red and white were pleasant and very good value.Filiss0

Best deals I've found recently are at Tescos (combining good offers with a good voucher):
18 bottles of wine £41.12 (inc p&p)
6 bottles champange £46.94 (inc p&p)

When you see a bottle of wine for 3 pounds - it certainly maikes you wonder about the quality of that wine!
With approx 75p in every £1 I spend on fuel going to the Exchequer in taxes and VAT, should I worry about the quality of the fuel?
