Excise duty on wine is about 1.50 per bottle - and VAT on top of that. Keep that in mind when you buy a bottle of wine - it gives you a good idea of how much the wine cost.

When you see a bottle of wine for 3 pounds - it certainly maikes you wonder about the quality of that wine!

Thats a ridiculous thought process. You can get some fabulous wines for £3.99 a bottle, and Im very fussy when it comes to wine

    It's actually £1.63 PER LITRE (Exceeding 5.5% - not exceeding 15% abv.)
so only £1.22 a standard bottle

    I agree with peejay67.
I am an avid red wine drinker and find the £3.99 bottles of Sainsburys wine such as Corbieres and Fitou very nice and that's in comparison to some wines which cost £10 and upwards.

    Complete rubbish !

I can buy some really good wines in Morrissons for £2.99 when they have special offers, and the £3.99 specials wines are usually top notch.

I have here Blue Nun french Merlot for £3.49 and Rosemount Estate Semillon Chardonnay for £3.99. These two wines are some of the best I have had at these great prices.

I wouldn't say it was complete rubbish - it is a factor - but everyone has different tastes.

However generally, the more you pay, the more is spent on the actual wine (including the producers profit margin).

My favourite tip is the depth of the dip at the bottom of a bottle of wine, the deeper the dip the better the quality...

Yes, some of the new world stuff is very drinkable as well as affordable.

My favourites at the moment are the Argentinian Malbecs...

Also the quality of the cork is an indicator although a lot now are plastic or screw cap.
