Sky scrapping HD charges?

Just a warning to others, I had sky come and fix a problem on my box this weekend, they tried to charge me £65 to replace the box so I said no, then they tried to sign me up for HD for £6 a month but with a free box and again I said no, then they finally gave me the free box which was fitted on Sunday morning – the sky man that came though said that from November they are scrapping the sky HD charges of £10 a month though! Apparently there is a mad rush to try and get customers signed up this month to try and get some extra £££ before its free anyway. Not sure if its wholly true but just a caution to all MSE-ers out there to maybe hold fire this month as HD ‘offer’ may not be all they seem

They were talking about scrapping the HD charges when I did my Sky HD course when it was first released back in 2006ish,in the same vein as they scrapped the Sky+ charge.
Nothing ever came of it obviously.

I reckon they'll just put everyone up to the HD price and give a free HD box to whoever complains. [/cynic]

There's been rumours about Sky dropping the HD charge since they first introduced HD so I won't believe it until it comes off my bill.

To be honest, I would expect Sky to only drop the HD charge for customers already on the highest package (Sky World) to begin with if they are indeed planning on scrapping the charge.

IMHO they would drop it if they were losing customers to the competition.
Since there is none, unless you count Virgin, its unlikely.

The talk was it would be dropped when the HD customer base was large enough to justify it,the reason we were told that they dropped the Sky+ charge when the HD came in was they'd loose customers if they tried to charge £10 for HD & another £10 for the Sky+ facilities.
  • It will probably stay until the next thing, probably 3D tv is more established.

Personally I think £10 a month for HD is a total and utter rip off considering the number of channels you are paying for.

Not to mention you also pay for the HD versions of some of the FTA SD channels, which is a cheek.

Of course, Virgin Cable saying they don't charge extra for HD is really hacking them off - I think the pressure is now on for them to bite the bullet....
  • how i would love this to be true, but im afraid this isnt gonna happen anytime soon, sky are making obsence money and are in no rush to stop a cash cow and plus mr murdoch has just forked out a fair few pounds over the NOTW phone hacking scandle( Yes i know news corp are a minor shareholder, well 40%) but who are they trying to kid with that.

i am with everyone else on this an extra £10 a month is very steep charge for just some extra channels

I am guessing they were planning on the 3D channels taking over the £10 charge, but consumer apathy means that's never going to bring in the ££££'s.
