Anyone use home accounting software?

Options
I used to use Quicken to keep track of all our household spending but that fell by the wayside after my daughter was born 8 years ago and I see it's not available anymore in the UK. I've downloaded some free budgeting spreadsheets here and there but what I really want is some software similar to Quicken that I can use to see where all our money is going so we can decide where we might want to cut back in order to increase our savings.

It has to be easy and quick to learn and to use otherwise I'm not going to stick with it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Well personally I still used Quicken and have done since the mid 1990's. The last edition I got and therefore the one I'm still using is 2001
  • I use Moneydance, it does cost but i find it easy to use and also has an app that you can fill in on the go and then sync with your desktop which saves me having to hold on to receipts every day.
  • This free version of MSMoney might suit you.

  • I have used Quicken UK for years and though no longer supported, it still works fine for me. My version is XG 2004 running on Win 7 64 bit.

Beware this is a US version, and is incompatible with files created by UK versions of MS Money. It also means that all the options (and vocabulary) are tailored for US users. For example, when creating a new recurring bill, the only payment method is "write check" [sic]. No concept of standing orders or direct debit exists. It is now possible to create a non-USD account in this version (but well hidden), whereas multiple currencies were not supported in previous US versions.

I forgot to mention I use a Mac. I'm not sure if I could use my old version of Quicken on my new laptop but if I manage to find the installation disks I could give it a go. I've also found "Home Accountz" which offers a 30-day free trial and is UK based. Has anyone tried it?

Seconding the Moneydance recommendation. If you've used Quicken, you'll find it easy to adapt to Moneydance.

  • I really like this one: MMEX and I have used it for a while with no problems. I find it very user friendly!
  • I have used MSMoney since 1995 & It is the best bit of software I have ever purchased. However it has been discontinued for a number of years & there is a sunset version, but its american & with limited functionality. Has anyone managed to install MSmoney on Windows 7 64bit?
