One quote direct £150 admin fee

Options
My partner and I recently moved house so needed to alter the addresses of our car insurance. I am with the co-op and was charged nothing, I even received money back due to the lower risk of the area. She however is with One Quote Direct and has to pay £150. This is criminal. Can they do this? I don't mind paying a reasonable fee but this is robbery for keying in a new address on a computer

Ask them to itemise this - maybe the increase is a premium adjustment plus an admin fee. (The fact that another insurer doesn't charge an extra premium for the new address is immaterial)

If it is all admin fee, then you need to dispute it!

I doubt if it's just an admin fee - your company may regard your newer area as higher risk and therefore there is an element of higher premium in the charge.

If it is just admin then it's several times a normal fee.

A charge of £150 would suggest it is not just an admin charge but also an increase in premium. However, a round figure of £150 would be unusual (unless you are rounding it).

The FOS publications have shown they accept fees upto £50 (it could be more now as that was 5 years ago but its a good guide and even if its higher, it would be something like £65 due to inflation. not 150). So, if it is all admin fee then you should dispute it. If its admin fee and premium for increased risk then its not an admin fee as you have suggested.

  • It will probably be cheaper to cancel the policy, get the balance and pay any early redemption charges. They might change their tune when you tell them you're leaving though.

Which will create an admin charge (again) and suffer a premium refund that is not exactly pro rata (close but not exact depending on where it is in the life of the policy). Doing this can actually be the most expensive thing to do. Worth a check but it is unlikely.

Apart from all the cancellation charges, also bear in mind that following this advice will mean no NCD being awarded for the part year, (which may be a significant cost).
  • The area cannot be a higher risk because I received money back from the co-op due to the fact that the area we have moved to is a lower risk area. I know that we will never reinsure my parners car using this company again and I would advise others not to

Your logic doesn't work for insurance premiums (hence the need to always shop around).

Just because the co-op consider it "lower risk" than your previous address doesn't mean every other insurer will!

But do get them to itemise the £150 as previously advised.
  • In my own experience, One Quote Direct is little more than an Online Scam Company, trading under the pretense of an Insurance Company.

    Proof in the writing!:
To copy of a persons Driving License or similar is a direct unlawful breach of Crown Copywrite, with a potential sentence of up to 10 years imprisonment. (Why does the UK Law enforcement not cover this?)

To cancel a persons insurance policy through lack of supplying a driving license copy is a scam.
This is what they have done to me...

The DVLA has my driving license (for a simple change of address) so I cannot send One Quote Direct a copy. They were told this in writing and over the phone yet they continued to cancel my policy, charging me almost £220 for 2 months insurance. The total insurance was £420 for 12 months !

Had they informed me PRIOR to completing the policy that they required a copy of my Driving License I would have refused and gone elsewhere but they didn't which shows they are acting unethically... at the very Least!

    Avoid at all Cost !

They are at the budget end of the market for a reason.

Buy a decent policy and policy changes maybe free. My company charge £15 admin fee.
But at thge budget end where price only counts and admin fees tend to rise.

But as mentioned get the facts and figures 1st. You still need to pay the bill so far and another admin fee to cancel. Is it cheaper to move?
