I hate them BUT hubby and son love them and mither me to get them. Reading the labels makes me a feel queasy and like I never want to allow them over the threasehold but is there such a thing as a decent quality/ healthy(ish) hot dog?

Hi rach,
To me a hot dog is a sausage in a bread roll? Buy some decent butcher's sausages, add some fried onions and a good dollop of mustard (or whatever sauce they like) and they'll never want the processed, yucky ones with unspeakable ingredients again.

i'm the same as pink-winged i never buy those tinned/jar things they look horrible i buy normal sausages and pop them in a bap, saying that my hubby would freak if i gave him a hotdog sausage and my kids have never had them (i don't buy those sausages in beans either..yuk) so don't know anything about themDEC GC £463.67/£450

Hmm yes but you can't chuck a proper sausage in the microwave for 20-30 seconds and then eat it - husbands and sons (stepsons in my case) don't want any more time or effort than that;) Plus of course real sausages are quite expensive.
I buy them from Lidl, 99p for 10. Everything else in this house is 'real food', including homemade bread, pizzas, and none of us eat Mcdonalds etc. I just figure there are worse things they could be eating - so long as it's not every meal:)
Edited to add, I mean the ones in vaccuum packs, I never buy them in tins or jars.0 -

You can if you bulk cook them in the oven and freeze them, then when someone is hungry bung one in the microwave for a minute and half, check it's piping hot right through and hey presto a hot dog!

I buy the Herta Frankfurters.. I would NOT allow my family to eat Princes hotdogs and the like that come in tins, with their mechanically reclaimed chicken etc. Herta ones taste nice and have at least 80% pork I think. Get them on offer if you can as they aren't cheap, Tesco do their own version now but haven't tried them.
They aren't healthy, at around 10% fat but they are an occasional treat. Yummy with onions and the only 'hotdog' style sausages I can eat (DH would happily eat the cheapest nastiest ones I can find!).

you can cook them and then keep them in the fridge (my mum and dad used to do this then eat them cold) so there easily heated, for me microwaving a sausage just puts me off more saying that my microwave has been broke for 8 months and i havent replaced it because i never use it, really it's just taking up space, i'd prefer mcd's to a hotdog atleast they use 100% meat and chicken and since i used tow ork there i know all that rubbish you hear about them is just that rubbish i had to sack someone once for just treatening to spit in someones burger (he was new) sayings that the price tag of a hotdog is alot less so more mse just not for me i guess as i'd never eat themDEC GC £463.67/£450

I only buy the 70% to 80% meat content too. I tend to find the German made ones from either Lidl or Aldi the best. I always read the label and we never buy anything knowingly with mechanically seperated meat.DFW Nerd 267. DEBT FREE 11.06.08

I haven't got any at the moment so can't check the ingredients but I'm pretty sure they have a very high pork content. They've had one pack of 10 over 3 weekends so I'm not going to worry about it.
Macdonalds was only an example, personally I hate the taste and have never eaten a whole Macd burger. OH used to eat them a lot but we don't have one nearby so he went quite a long time without, then when he had one he hated it, he was really disappointed!
As for real sausages, I love them but they're a treat nowadays, and at £4.95 a kilo from the farm shop they're are not as expensive as most decent supermarket ones. I won't buy rubbish ones so we hardly ever have them.0 -
