Self Employed Broken Back, what benefits can be claimed

Options
Ok so yesterday my partner had a motorcycle accident and broke his back.
He is self employed, has been self employed for around 12 months but was full time employed before this for 3 years.
He lives with his parents and is 22 years old, completely unable to work as hes lying in a hospital bed.
I am worrying about money and need to find out what we need to look into to claim for.
I do not live with him, his parents are both employed.
Will he be entitled to ESA and DLA? He has been told itll be around 3-4 months he could be off as he is a shop fitter and has a very manual job.
He has worked since the age of 16 so I hope he can get a little something back!!
I have a million and one phone calls to make and I'm sure people to do with directgov wont speak to me as I'm not a claimant.
Hope someone can help!!!!
Thankyou anyway

He won't be entitled to DLA as or that the care or mobility needs have to have been for the last 3 months and expected for the next 6.

ESA is either contribution based which is dependent on NI contributions for the last two full years. Otherwise it is income based which takes any savings into account. Although you don't live together they may still count you as a couple depending on circumstances.

Hope that he makes a full recovery.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

  • dla only pays out when you have qualified for it for 3 months and are likely to qualify for another 6 months at least, being self emplyed did he not have insurance to cover being unable to work?
was the accident someone elses fault?

What type of NI payment class has he been paying? Private insurance for self employed? Insurance for injuries from the accident? If he's 22, living with parents....and you are not his partner.....i find it strange that you are enquiring about benefits that 'we' need to look into and 'we' can claim if you are not a couple claiming together.

No you cant claim on policies if you have a bike accident, and no it was techically his fault as the bike gave way while going round a roundabout

While I'm sorry your boyfriend is injured, and I hope that he has a speedy recovery, I did say I found it 'strange'......your abuse in the post above led me to look at your previous posts....and found this one, where in post 7, you state that you had only just moved in together, just a couple of months ago. yet, in your post above, you say he lives with his parents......differing from your other posts stating you will use his parents as his business address for company vehicle purposes. I said it sounded strange.....

maybe you should have mentioned that in your OP?
if he had accident and illness insurance then it might have paid out obviously he didnt have

I note that under PIP, current proposals are for this to go to 6/6 months.

This is true. My friend who was only in her early 30's had a severe stroke. She is a stay at home Mum to 6 kids and the Youngest was only 3 Months old at the time. Her Husband had to give up his job to care for her and the kids and they couldn't get any help for 3 Months exept housing and Council Tax Benefit!

tbh that seems like one of the better ideas, imho dla/pip should only be for long term problems anyway and 6/6 will possibly stop alot of time wasting applications and speed up the process
