I have used Newark a few times in the distant past, however I was surprised when I went a few months ago that you can now only view cars prior to the auction if you book an accompanied viewing, and you are restricted to viewing a maximum of 3 cars. This means that you are unable to be present to see the car being started up before being sold - this put me right off.

Newark and Bawtry are both worth a visit just to see some of the punters they attract.

Not been for a year - are you saying that you can longer walk around the yard?

When I went in Feb this year you had to turn up prior to the start of the auction and wait until someone was available to accompany you to view a maximum of three cars in the yard. Prices were astronomical too - I saw a very tired 51 plate 1.3 Mitsubishi Space Star with bald tyres, bodywork damage and starting issues sell for over £600.

I haven't been to Newark in years, but when I did, it was all backstreet dealers selling their crap to each other. My brother goes fairly regularly and says it's better than it was.

And agreed, make sure you stand somewhere where you can see the whole room when bidding, the back wall has a nasty habit of putting its hand up.

Personally, the only auctions I would still go to are Aston Barclay. I've delivered hundreds of cars in and out of there and hardly ever driven one that I wouldn't have for myself. BCA are too expensive on fees unless you're a big buyer. I've never picked a car up from Manheim that wasn't in some way rogerred, and the independents seem to be full of stuff that isn't good enough for the back street dealers to sell.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?
  • I might have to go next week just to check it out, I will report back.

If you can't view the stock until its in the ring, that's a problem. I wouldn't like to be a private punter making a 60 second buying decision with my £5k.

The website appears to be broken too!!! Not listing new stock
  • It's an auction! So, as said before, there will be ghost bids or no bidding would ever start, and it takes a brave auctioneer to take a ghost bid against a real bid when the reserve is close, ie if the reserve isn't going to get hit, your bid won't buy you the car anyway.
And the motor trade knows a lot of the cars are trouble, but if they are cheap enough it's worth a go, as a private man you will be there because it's cheaper than private or a dealer so a bit of repair money set aside is sensible.
It's also worth noting there's nothing there from webuyanycar.com, that all ends up at bca under the guise of car group, and just look at the fees you pay to buy there!
And anything older than a 51 plate at Newark is no reserve, so if no one wants it ( which no one in the trade does if it's an old Mondeo or vectra) you'll get it for next to nothing.
But to be honest it's simple, look at the online brochure before you head up there, buy the catalogue and wait by the doors for it to come in, you'll get 3-4 minutes to look round it before it gets on front of the rostrum. If you need more time than that, go and pay a fortune in buyers fees at bca on a car that someone sold to we buy any car.com because they knew it was broken.
There's some really good stuff goes through here, just not all the time!

Lot's of useful comments from people in the game thank you.

However I would like to add that there is a story with every single car there, some minor and some major (as with most smaller auctions I guess).

As long as you set some money aside for repairs and worst case scenarios you should be good.

Not been in years but trust me you do have to know what your doing in a place like this.

bluegecko - Some very sound and helpful advice there, however in my experience and having previously purchased shed loads from there - Most cars were there for a reason and if allowances are made then its feasible, and YES there is the occasional bargain, but you obviously know what your buying and what to look for, but Joe public wouldn't necessarily have that "magic eye". I am just saying its a very high stakes environment and not for the faint hearted.

WHAT!!! So you can no longer walk to the car whilst its being started up?

I hear theres a lot of private entries then before and prices have gone through the roof?

    Anyone been there recently?

Have Bawtry upped their game now?

Delivered 100's myself over a few years, in and out to Aston Barclay in Prees Heath and Leeds. I seemed to deliver lots of lease and motability cars to them. Mechanically 99% of the cars I put in were fine most usually had a few marks at least but that was due to the motability customers not really giving two hoots about their cars.
