LPG for cooking

Hi there, not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, if not then hopefully someone will move it for me!

I've moved to a privately rented place in rural Lincolnshire, there's no mains gas so the heating runs on oil and the cooker has an electric oven and LPG fuelled hob. There are three 47kg bottles of propane outside, I don't know how to tell how much gas is in them but by the weight of them I'm judging that one is full, one empty and one half-full.

As I've never used LPG except in tiny cylinders when camping, I'd be glad if someone could give me a rough idea how long one of these cylinders is likely to last me, used purely for the hob?

Also the only place I can find that delivers to the area is FloGas, and they charge about £68 for a 47kg cylinder -- is this the going rate?

You should get at least 6 months per cylinder just on hob use. If you can, just run one down at a time, as then you can always switch over as one runs out.

Thanks :) Do you know this from personal experience or is it an educated guess?

Personal experience. Have 2 x 47kg bottles here, solely for the hob.

I used to have a gas oven and hob and one of those bottles would last a good 12 months.
A year or so a go I was paying around £39 for a bottle delivered(Lincs)

One oven and a four burner hob used moderately, I'd have said. A 47kg container lasts about six months. Last price (last week) was £65.60 delivered and fitted.

    Hope that helps.
  • Thanks everyone. It's just the hob that's on LPG, the oven is electric. Great to see that the former tenants have been so kind as to leave me a couple of years' worth of free fuel by the looks of it!!

devildog where did you get that bottle for £39 then?
