Best time to buy a new telly?

Afternoon all,

My husband and I are thinking of getting a 3dtv. We went into comet today and looked on curries online and there are some good deals in our price bracket. However, do you reckon its best to wait till Christmas or even January sales before we buy?

Opinions gratefully received!

Why do you want a 3d TV? There is only one 3D channel on Sky, glasses are expensive and every manufacturer has a different standard, bit of a fad like in the cinema.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Personally I wouldn't go any where near those stores, I think you will find any TV cheaper and with better after sales.

3d Tvs are being discounted due to everyone being utterly underwhelmed.

I bought a Samsung 43in Plasma from Curry's in July, after looking around the shops,I couldn't find the same spec TV near me any cheaper.Sods law, less than a month after it the same TV was nearly £100 cheaper than what I'd paid for it.
I've not has any problems buying from my local Currys before but I wouldn't use their aftercare service, nor would I buy from Argos.
So the really is no best time to buy a new TV as the price goes up & down constantly.
Incidentally, the same TV I bought (see link below) is also sold in Currys & Dixons, but the price is different, despite them all being the same company.

  • Interesting, thank you!

Well for me I am not overly bothered, I'll just watch the occasional film, but my husband is keen on the sports and also for playing COD on the ps3. (We get to use a sky friends and family discount on the sky3d package, otherwise price wise we'd not be able to afford it).

The main reason for thinking of buying a telly is that we need a new one for our bedroom and I think it makes more sense to upgrade our current living room one and stick our current LG hdtv on the wall in our bedroom.

Interesting point about the price differences, even doing some brief internet shopping there is a vast difference store to store. The best deal I've found is a panasonic 50inch reduced from £1299 to £799 in curry's, same telly in comet is almost full price.

I'm not rushing into anything though!

richer sounds will beat them like mad, argos has good sales around end november time. Their grundig 37" is good full hd not hd ready like most
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

It is certainly not worth it for broadcast 3D, unless you get a 3D Blu Ray player as well, however if you want to stay ahead of the crowd, buy an LED (not LCD or Plasma). These are now affortdable and come from a variety of manufacturers, and the difference in picture quality in 2D and 3D is to die for....

Best time is generally around April/May when the new ranges come out, and the old ranges get priced down to clear. But large screen TVs tend to be cheaper after Christmas, whereas for smaller TVs, before Christmas is the cheaper time.

I did nearly die when I saw how poor the image was!!

LED as sold today, is just and LCD screen using LEDs as the backlight and suffer from significant issues - to be fair, all flat screen TVs do but LEDs are much less resolvable than Plasma.

Generally new models of TVs by the big players are released around April and so the cheapest time to buy is to get "last years" model shortly after the new model has been released.

Other than that the back end of the year is best as the early buyer premium will be well gone and youre just looking at normal sales.

Onces you've decided which model you want then have a look online, virtually all models can be bought cheaper from a company with better service than the likes of Currys or Comet

Go for a plasma we was warned against them but the stories u hear are not true.we have a friend who works in currys we asked him and he said plasma all the way,LCD will soon become a thing of the past as there isnt a huge range in size.plasma is more sturdy wheras the others are computer type screens so a bang or bump will do damage, plasma's are more sturdy and also cheaper.sack the 3d tv just a waste of time
