To be honest with you, Apple have made it impossible to use iTunes with anything other than an ipod. I think your best bet would be to burn the tracks to cd and then copy them to your mp3 player. I'm guessing when your mp3 player is plugged in it shows up as a removable drive so you should be able to drag and drop that way.
  • don't think it's at all possible, you can find conversion programmes but ideally if you don't have an ipod try using either real player or media player to transfer because itunes always converts to it's own format to work for ipods. hope this makes sense lol

The simple answer is remove Itunes and install Musicmatch...

...burn the tracks to cd and then copy them to your mp3 player.

You'll lose a lot of the sound quality by doing this. When the MP3 was initially created, about 90% of the information was removed from the sound file. Burning it back to CD won't replace this lost data, and when you compress it into an MP3 file a second time, you'll lose even more audio information.

You can set itunes to record in mp3 in preferences -> advanced -> importing, don't think this can be used to re-encode, but might be worth a look.

actually just had a look and it can convert things, when you toggle the settings I mentioned the 'Convert Selection To ...' in the right click menu changes. It creates a copy of the original in the same folder, only tried this on unprotected content though.

Songs bought from Itunes have copy protection (DRM) to make sure only you use them.

But Itunes does allow you to burn tracks you have bought to cd. See the Help in Itunes.

There is no copy protection on the CD so you can, use the CD to create an aac/mp3/ogg/wma file. I suggest using a piece of software called Exact Audio Copy (eac) to "rip" the cd to wav files to your computer.

I'd recommend the foobar2000 media player to convert the wav files, and add tags.

But as esuhl said this involves a loss of quality. Itunes files are relatively low quality 128kbs, and converting (transcoding) "lossy" files (mp3/ogg/aac/wma) cant be done without a loss of quality.

If they truly are .m4p files, they're almost certainly encrypted.
MP4 files with audio streams encrypted by FairPlay Digital Rights Management as sold through the iTunes Music Store use the .m4p extension.
  • you can use something called IPOD AGENT

its a 3rd party dooby that will allow reverse transfer from mp3s from your ipod.
its a pay for thing but its available on a months trial.

if you want summut more robust you could go for ANAPOD EXPLORER
i use this as it allows two way transfer from desktop to ipod (assuming your a PC user). It shows the ipod as an external HD and list its content in as file explorer system.

its pretty good and is avail on single or multi user license
