Any free/cheap Norton 360 around at the moment?

I've googled and looked in the usual places but no luck :(

Last time my Norton was about to expire I got a deal where you signed up for a computer magazine and got a free years subscription to Norton, got the freebie and then cancelled the mag subscription. Is there anything similar going at the moment that anyone has heard of? My Norton expires in 27 days :(

Failing that whats the best freebie around at the moment, AVG used to be the one I used prior to Norton.

Thanks

  • Why bother with Norton? Avast is far better and free.

Haha, I get this everytime I mention Norton on here! It's been good for me tbf, people say it slows your computer down etc but I've never noticed any problems.

How does Avast compare with Norton then, does it do most things that Norton 360 does? Or is it just an Antivirus?

Just checked and the free one only covers antivirus/spyware, things it doesn't cover are banking/shopping online and firewall.
I can download a program from my bank (co-operative) for banking but not shopping online.
Is there anything that covers these things?

if you are a student or have a student in your family you could try http://www.software4students.co.uk/Kaspersky_2012_Antivirus-software.aspx Kaspersky internet security wil do everything you want and is as good if not better than Norton.

If you feel the need to have a full security suite.

Download and save Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 to your PC. Don't install.

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall Norton 360

    Re-boot.

Install Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 by double clicking on the file that you downloaded earlier. You will have a thirty day evaluation period. If you are happy with it, use the Activation Code from this Kaspersky Internet Security DVD £9.99 No need to install the DVD, as you would already have the updated version installed. Just insert the Activation Code.

windows has a Firewall built in (norton actually uses the windows firewall for it's firewall)

as for protecting web banking/shopping all browsers come with built in phishing protection, which will block known/suspicious websites, and also avast comes with 'webrep' that gives you a site rating on how much you can trust it, (exactly the same as norton does - but that part of norton is actually free so you can carry on using nortons if you wanted to)

you can also use norton DNS to physically block malware/suspicious sites from your computer, again completely free.

The best rated is Microsofts own Security Essentials (Anti Virus), Defender (for Spyware) and Zonealarm (firewall) - all free
I agree that Norton became too bloated about 5 years ago - until then I used it for years - I have never had any problems with AVG though - I would never pay for AV though !!
