Not impressed with Airtricity

I know this will sound daft but I had no idea I was tied into a contract with Airtricity
Long story short, my ex has moved out of the house and after a dispute he decided to stop paying the utilities. I finally got a letter from Airtricity saying I had to contact them to set up an account (initially I was told they couldn't discuss anything with me as my name wasn't on the previous account and the account was still in place).
When I signed up, at no point did anyone mention a contract. I know for sure I won't be here in 2 years and about 99.999% sure I won't be here in a year but no-one mentioned a cooling off period, breaking any kind of contract or anything of the sort.
What have I done?0 -

I changed over to Airtricity in July 2010 when they first appeared here and they were not tying people in to contracts at that stage. When I left to go to Budget a month ago there was no issue whatsoever - they just billed me what I owed them. End of.
Even if you are tied in to a contract with them that shouldn't prevent you from moving - I'd imagine they'll just transfer the account to the new address.0 -
Don't mind at all hazel. There was no charge as I wasn't in a contract. The bill was for the electricity I had used since my last bill.0

Anyone signed up for the meter reading reminder service on Airtricity? When I got my September bill it was for £4 as my estimated meter reading was the same as my reading at the end of July. I would have submitted a reading but was trusting that signing up for their five days before reminder email service meant they would actually send me the email.....not so!
Sent them an email pointing this out and clarifying that I didn't expect to pay for my August/September electricity at the new price from 1st October rate, nor at only 8% discount (1st year of contract ended mid-October). Their response re: my next bill: "if we have over estimated you it will be rectified on this bill", so obviously no interest in actually reading the detail of a complaint.
Anyway, will wait to see what the next bill looks like and then probably switch to budget.0 -
I just want to say how fantastic that we in NI have finally got a choice! Was so sick of hearing about ones on the mainland able to move suppliers while we were held to ransom by NIE as if we were in the dark ages (no pun intended) Yahoo! Budget here I come!:j0
