BT Infinity - Any Good?

We have been with Virgin BB ONLY 10MB for sometime now and usually it's ok except once every few months there would be disconnection problems.

Everytime it takes more than 30 minutes to get through to someone and as we don't have a Virgin landland, we wouldn't be able to report any problem using saynoto0870 unless it's during office hours.

I am not an excessive user but they always reduce the connection speed. The local area fault problem is getting worse and worse and if i am correct, i can;t even find an email address that I can use to email them if there are any problems.

So I am now considering BT infinity - although the overall price (inc phone line rental) will be more expensive for a similar package - but does anyone know whether it is any good? (both the connection itself and customer service)

Many thanks

Infinity will have a faster download and upload than 10Mbps cable and so far as I know there is nothing like the Standard Traffic Management which throttles connections using more than the published amounts during the periods specified.

The first thing you need to check is whether you can actually get Infinity though.

And you will need a BT line installing if you currently only have VM cable.

I don't like BT as a company so don't use them,
However I do like their cable product.
So I get fttc (fibre to the cabinet) which is what infinity is from a company called aquiss
    Www.aquiss.net
    No complaints at all!
  • Many thanks for all your replies.

Yes we can get Infinity now and there could be an old BT line here... but I guess (if they haven't changed their policy since i looked several months ago) they can install a BT line for free.

Interesting about this Www.aquiss.net web site.. I will definitely look into it.

The main thing is not to have this annoying traffic management as I never go over their monthly quota. I was tempted to upgrade to the Virgin 30MB but as they annoy me so much with their customer service + I never manage to get a cheaper price like others do in this forum, I am seriously considering moving over to BT and/or Aquiss.

    Many thanks again all

As you don't have an active BT line I think you'll probably get a better deal taking Infinity + line than BT Line + Aquis FTTC. Last I saw BT were offering what I though was a decent Infinity + line + calls bundle.

If you aren't exceeding the VM limits which are quite low on the 10Mbps products then it could be congestion in your area. The 30Mbps broadband is on a different infrastructure from 10Mbps (10 is the older DOCSIS1 1 while everything else is EU DOCSIS 3) so it could be less (or more) congested but certainly the STM threshold is far higher.

Note that there are no monthly limits - the limits are daily in the time periods shown

Another route for BT Infinity info.-

    BT Infinity forum.....

    BT Infinity any good?.....

And you can search the community for any other similar posts by entering the details in a search box at top right.

I think Infinity is great.... much more reliable than my old Tiscali/TT 1.5Mbps if it stayed on...

If your into P2P make sure you research as BT do manage this form of traffic.

I'm still classed as a new user... Grrrr so can't post links?????

Please add http: to the links if required.

does anyone have experience of both BT Infinity and Virgin Cable?

I've had sloooo BT ADSL for a few years now and have never averaged more than 1.4Mb/s download rates so have a choice of these two to upgrade to (and as a measure of how I'm currently getting screwed both deals will work out a tenner cheaper)

The only way of getting 'Infinity' BT brand name for FTTC is to:-
    Land line
    Calls package
    FTTC product

I did sign up 8 days ago purely to get an install date but havent goven my MAC.
What has tirned me off is the total lack of customer support, you will need it!
If worried about 30 mins on phone bare in mind call centre is in India. You will be back to square one at 30 mins as they cannot veer off reading from a script. Subsequently getting no where.
It seems they only way of getting even simple problems sorted is contacting a mod on BT forum, however this can take three days to pick up. Absolutely useless if connection is down.
Further to that i would add simple tasks such as locked IP profile have taken 10 days, a decent ISP do this within hours.

Now add to that they are making excess money on phone line and calls. ie pay £14.25 p/m line rental and Anytime calls, thats it unless dial a mobile number etc.
BT equivalent £14.60 p/m line rental plus Anytime calls £4.90. If you dont use 10 calls per month you get charged an additional £5.15! Total of £10.40 extra plus charged for other aspects.
