Hiya,
I am just about to attempt to make my first ever pie!! I am doing a chicken and broccoli one but the recipe asks for cornflour. Now i assume this is only to thicken the sauce?? The thing is i don't have any! Can normal flour be used instead??
I have tried using the search but its just bringing hundreds of threads up that have recipes in lol
Any help is much much appreciated
Thank you!

Yes, it's usually used as a thickener, and so you can use plain flour instead. However, cornflour gets absorbed really easily, flour needs to "cook" a bit. This only matters if you are adding it towards the end of a recipe..cornflour you could add, whisk in and serve, flour you'd have to add, cook for a bit, then serve. Hope that makes sense.0

can arrowroot be used as an alternative thickening agent ? it also keeps sauces clear rather than opaque.0

Just in the kitchen making sweet and sour to recipe kindly given here yesterday, got to the last bit and realised I have no cornflour. Could I use just regular flour to thicken the sauce? Don't really want to get little ds dressed and drag him to shops if I can get away with it. What do you reckon?0

cant you thicken it with a small bit of plain flour?
i could be wrong there but i have used it in the past for stews etc not sure it would work with that type of sauce:xmastree:Is loving life right now,yes I am a soppy fool who believes in the simple things in life :xmastree:0 -
You can use flour but you'd need to make sure it has "cooked out" otherwise it will takes floury, that probably means cooking it for five or more minutes which doesn't suit this kind of sauce.
Do you have arrowroot? Alternatively I'd probably try stirring in some packet smash potato if you have any - that works will as a thickener!Piglet
