I've been having a flu jab for 3 years and I can highly recommend it, I know it doesn't stop you catching colds, but this has dramatically improved since I've been having the injection, even when everyone around me has one. I would also say that if this is your first injection about 2 weeks after having it you will get flu/cold like symptoms, this improves each year, last year I didn't get any. Good luck, its a wise choice to get one.

I paid for the flu jab for 4 years before I qualified for it free due to being diagnosed diabetic.

I alway thought it was worth the money and would have carried on paying for it, I was in a job that brought me into contact with a large number of people so more chance of catching something and to a certain extent passing it on so it was definitely worth it for me.

This winter’s flu jab protects against the same three strains of flu as last year’s vaccines. These include the H1N1 strain of the flu virus. H1N1 is the same strain of flu that caused the 2009 swine flu pandemic.
H1N1 is included because it is likely to be one of the major flu strains circulating in Britain this winter.
The best time to have a flu jab is in the autumn, from September to early November.

It appears that the majority of us don't mind paying for this jab, maybe the surgeries should have a voluntary contributions box for people who do want to pay. :)

  • If anyone has had it done privately could you say where? Have never had this done but had a flu last year - luckily I think fairly mild - and not keen to repeat the experience!

I get it every year as I have asthma, have been giving it for years now. I still get colds and chest infections though, usually for me twice or three times a year. The most painful was the pneumonia jab which you get every 10 years it seems. Don't think they offer that if you pay? But it would also be a good one to get if you can.

I have paid for a flu jab for the last 3 years as I am not old enough to get a free one.I have only had flu once, about 12 years ago and I have never felt so ill in my life,so I certainly don't want that experience again.I always go to Boots for my jabs,I paid £12.99 this year, which may be a bit more than other places, but I prefer Boots.

I feel the same way about Superdrug.;)

I had the flu jab on the 3rd October and paid £7.95 at Superdrug. It gives me an aching arm for a day but otherwise I have no problems.

I have had lots of heavy colds over the years:p that have developed into bronchitis:p:p:p but nothing has compared with flu. If you think you've had flu and managed to continue with your normal routine.........it wasn't flu.

I've had flu once, never again. I literally couldn't lift my head off the pillow..........I was so weak. People who say 'I had flu and made it into work' are kidding themselves.

I'm not in a high risk group so I don't qualify for a free flu jab at the doctors but I'll continue to pay for my annual flu jab. It's worth every penny.

I have a flu jab every year at Superdrug, it's a good price and excellent service.

I think I might get one this year. I've had flu a couple of times in the last few years and it is so horrendous.
  • Mine was a mild flu I think in that I could make it out of bed. But just literally to the sofa. I did go to the corner shop one day (DH had it at the same time typically and we were out of everything) and it nearly killed me. I tried to go into work but the effort of standing in the shower did for me and DH pointed out that if I couldn't stand in the shower I certainly couldn't walk to work. Which I had to concede was right. Gonna try getting a shot next Friday I think...will give superdrug a call ahead to see if they do it in Belfast. Thanks everyone.
