How many weeks food?

Options
There's a thread on one of the other forums running where someone only has £x to last her family till next payday, and when she lists what food she has in the house atm there's about four items. Which makes me wonder...how much food do most folk keep in stock? If someone delivered say your usual milk, bread and £5 or so worth of fresh veg and fruit to your door once a week how long could you last without shopping for any other food at all?

(To make it easy, lets not count loo rolls, booze, nappies and pet food etc, just human food.)

I reckon I could manage four weeks of food for the four of us, though there might be some "interesting" recipes at the end. How about you?
Val.

I think I could do 4 weeks too although there isn't much meat in the freezer so vegetarian dishes would feature several days a week... And baked beans would feature a lot as I bought loads when it was buy 1 get 2 free :D

I plan to run down my freezer ready for Xmas so I can fit more meat in :D

If I found myself suddenly without any money to buy food, I'd have 8 weeks supply. Freezer (not so full now as I'm leading to its defrosting), some cans of tuna/sardines, lots of pulses, wholewheat pasta, some dried vegs, protein powder as backup.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

Well I have just done an inventory of my freezer as I'm trying to run it down and along with what tinned stuff I have in my cupboards I think I could probably last about a month ,maybe more as I am a pretty inventive and frugal person
    Top Shelf
    3 x packets of Multi-seeded wraps
1 x portions of Lamb for stewing
5 x portions of bones for stewing stock for soups
    1 x Pork Shank
    2 x portions cheese, mixed
    3 x battered cod portions,
    1 x 250grams Lurpak butter
    2 x Chicken portions
1 x portioned cooked sliced beef
    6 x Pitta Breads
    3 packets sliced Ham
    500 x grams minced beef
    2 x beefburgers,1 x burger with cous cous
    1 x bag mushrooms,
    1 x garlic stick
    2 x portion bacon
    1 x cod loin
    1 x portion garlic & herb butter
    6 x portions sausages
1 x portion Barnsley lamb chop
    1 x portion sliced bacon
    1 packet puff pastry
    Middle shelf
    1 x pork loin joint
    2 x portions of liver & Bacon
1 x bag of frozen fruits of the forest, 1 x bag blackberries
1 x portion of smoked mackerel
    1 garlic butter, 1 x peppered sauce
    20 x portions mashed potatoes
1 x bag of carrots sliced
9 x small portions garlic bread
1 x large bag of peas
1 x bag whole green beans
    1 x pitta breads
    1 x beef burger
1 x bag crinkle cut chip
    2 x portions battered cod

    Bottom shelf
2 x portions sliced brown bread
    2 x bags fish, 2 x cod steaks, 1 x salmon steak, 1 lb cod fillet
    2 x 250 grammes beef mince
    500gms beef mince
    1 x bag onions (chopped)
    1 portion pork sausage meat
    3 x pitta breads
1 x lemon sole, dusted with black pepper

I am hoping that by using up as much as I can I can defrost my freezer by at least the end of November.
my tinned cupboard is fairly full at the moment so probably with just having to buy F&V plus milk and maybe some bread I will be able to do it .Mind you there is only me to feed and my Sunday dinner plus one mid-week I have at my DDs.

There's an interesting question! I reckon I could do about 8 weeks - possibly even 10 - although I'd end up eating a lot of mince. (I bought 12 packs while it was on special offer and froze them all: I've still got 6 or 7 packs left as that's a lot of mince for a one-person household :o).
Back after a very long break!

Is that you & three children or you & another adult & two children?
Do you have ready access to a car or shop on foot/public transport?
Do you own a freezer? Is it large or small?
Are you employed? Have you been steadily employed for a good while (how long is a good while?)?
    Do you have debt?

    So many variables.

If you asked me this same time last year would have said 8-10weeks.

    but freezers running down
cupboards getting bare running out of basics
    fridge is empty

I desperatly need to do big shop.

I have about 2weeks worth of food would much rather have 4weeks full pay day.

we have huge chest so may need emergancy trip to farmfoods
milkman delivers some of our milk but not all of it
cheese and ham does not last 5mins
    neither does the fruitbowl/crisps

both hubby and eldest take packed lunches.

    running out of beans,tinned tomatoes
    run out of herbs
    running low on cereals/pasta

have been inventive in the past.

    hubbys much fussier than me.

  • 6 to 8 weeks.. but a lot of the meals would be vegetarian as there is only about 2 to 3 weeks worth of meat in the freezer..... I dont mind but OH isnt a big veggie meal fan. I dont think he thinks he has been fed if there isnt a portion of meat somewhere on his plate!!!

We have about a weeks worth of "proper" food.

Theres no way we can afford to stockpile much any more and just buy what we need when we need it for the cheapest price.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

3 weeks plus if i was very inventive that would mean mainly eating porridge for breakfast
    Debt free

    Married 15/02/14:D
  • I need to do an updated inventory, but at a guess - I'd say about two weeks. I don't have that big a storecupboard or freezer, so can't keep a huge stash on hand.
