amyandoli wrote:Im with you pink, board guides do a great job! ive felt so bad for people feeling like they have to apologise for posting, some people are just plain nasty telling them off, or shoving them to a previous post. the search engine isnt great, but like everything else here its free. i think these are the same people who drive up your @rse on the roads, who make huffing and puffing noises at everything and are known as grumpy victor m's or annoying pug-faced nags! grr! lets have a board to refer nasties to so they can pick on each other! im not really angry, just sticking up for those who get picked on!
Who are these "nasties"??
As a direct result of reading this thread, yesterday, I used the search facility to respond to posts where a similar subject/question had been asked before, perhaps a few times beforeand inserted links to those posts and even the search results (as there are usually quite a number more that the poster may or may not choose to read - but at least, affording them that choice)
Did I consider that "shoving them to another post"? no - I considered it helpful to a) shortlist the one's I saw that were most pertinent and b) by highlighting the search link, giving them the opportunity to see other potential threads of interest.
Members also invest time in helping fellow members!
In my experience, whenever a *facility* comes under question, it gets mixed up somehow into being interpreted as a critisism of the BG's.
No one is saying the BG's are doing anyone a poor service and it shouldn't be taken that way - yet it's often the case that members feel they need to jump to the defense of BG's in issues such as these. Clearly, the BG's are not being critisized, it's the search facility, of which they have no control. The limited control they do have, they are utilising by way of indexing - that suits some, may not suit others and yet others still will compromise.
It's really saddening it see a red thumbs down icon and the thread titled in the way it is, mainly because it sooooo negative! A thumbs up and a thread entitled "Get more from OS" with a hints, tips, tutorials, pointers on searching would have been more positive and maybe, more productive?
But that's the whole point, it's a different ways of seeing things
MATH - like you, I've been here a while or two and yes, I can quite agree, if you've spent any great length of time in OS, you cannot help but see the same questions cropping up periodically. Why? Because new faces, enthusiastic, keen, knowledge hungry new faces come in
By the same token, those new faces may well have ways, means, tips, ideas to pass on when it comes to old topics; tips *we* may not have come across yet - so it's still very much two way traffic, surely?
Yes, Kaz, like you, I also have a memory of this being discussed in recent times and the anticipated repetative questions from new faces once the book was published and I agree on the point that it would surely resort to a read only forum if people were not given the opportunity to post questions which are relevant to *them* and their lifestyle choices and by that same token, new faces were not afforded the opportunity to offer their own experiences/examples/ways of doing things.
I think the title of the thread is less than diplomatic and could indeed make some members feel uncomfortable about asking questions - it's a pity it couldn't have been re-worded so that the same airing of views could have taken place but under a more positive banner.
Very valid point made that not every member has the same level of computer literacy and it's worth remembering, mainly because ... it's sooooo easy to forget!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We don't feel criticised here Queenie, honest
We are posting, a fair bit, to try and help explain the problems that ALL members have with finding their way around a huge board, and include tips and help that will go some way to making it easier for members to find their feet. I'm certainly not too old to have forgotten all the clangers I dropped when I first joined the boardNot to mention how long it took me to find my way around - and the board is wa-a-a-ay bigger now.
And yes, we BG's face all the same problems with finding things that everybody else does - we have no special tools available to us, we use the same indexes and search stuff that you have. Of course, we've had a fair bit of practice nowand memory helps a lot! If we know there's a thread somewhere and our first search word doesn't help - we'll try another that is likely to be in one of the posts on the subject.
Picking "search words" is an art - and an absolute master at this is PINK! Very good point actuallyAs for a link I think it got deleted in all honesty.
Sorry agree with Kaz, without the questions, ideas, recipes etc posted IMO this board would be boring. May aswell just make it a closed forum if people can't ask questions and generate new ideas.
Like has been said, if you don't like what you see, don't read it.
Some were not blessed with the skills or upbringing which has mean't they are OS, but are keen to learn. One day I might be more organised...........
