Eon 20 months DD or 22 months DD?

I have just come across this tariff from Eon and am I understanding this correctly?

If you stay on our Energy Fit Plan for 2 years and pay by fixed monthly Direct Debit, we'll give you back 2 months' worth of your energy free, one for each year. And we won’t collect your Direct Debit payment in months 12 and 24.

So are Eon only going to take 22 months direct debits in the 2 years and also give back 2 months direct debits so I only pay 20 direct debits?

£100 DD for 22 months then two months back so I only pay £2000 instead of £2400

Have you tried plugging it into a comparison site to check it out? The total cost of the tariff will still be the same just collected over 22 payments. You don't get owt for nowt, not from Eon anyway, it is a marketing ploy.

Reading the hilighted description I would read it as 22 payments providing you stay with them for a minimum of 2 years.

Your free month of energy is 1/12th of your annual energy charges. So, if your annual energy charges are £1,200, your free month would be £100 - credited to your account at the end of the year.

The blue bit is from their web site.

If you stay on the tarriff for the full 2 years then the DD will not be collected in months 12 and 24. EON will credit your account with 1 months usage in months 12 and 24. NOTE - it is 1/12 of your usage NOT the amount of your DD payment (ie if your DD is £100 pcm and you are using an average of £80 pcm then your account will be credited with £80 in months 12 and 24). Also you do not get the 8% Dual Fuel DD discount with this tarriff.

    I have done some research.

Another tariff to confuse us poor old age pensioners.

I shall give it a miss.

Have you tried putting your annual usage into one of the comparison sites to check if there are other options /alternative suppliers with good deals.

Just moving an older relative from Eon FOL3 as it ends this month to EDF fixed 2012. Light user.

With £30 cashback for swapping will be around £100 cheaper (for the year) than next best Eon offer, as an example.

Well spotted. This is just a "deferred discount", more common from NPower but the first (AFAIAA) that half the discount is deferred for 2 years.

Beware "deferred discount" if you do not understand the circumstances the "deferred discount" will be forfeited.

Under Consumer Focus Confidence Code rules a "deferred discount" credited during the first 12 months (even by a day) is discounted from the comparison headline cost (but may never be earned). Having looked at all the Eon Energy Fit Plan tariff links I cannot tell whether the first discount is credited before (or after) the expiry of the first 12 months. You are right to be confused and doubly right to give the tariff a miss.

I can confirm the discount is given in month 12.

    For example
JAN DD payment made of £100
FEB DD payment made of £100
MAR DD payment made of £100
APR DD payment made of £100
MAY DD payment made of £100
JUN DD payment made of £100
JUL DD payment made of £100
AUG DD payment made of £100
SEP DD payment made of £100
OCT DD payment made of £100
NOV DD payment made of £100
DEC NO DD PAYMENT MADE but a months average usage is credited to account (So if average monthly usage is £80 then £80 is credited to account on day DD payment is due)

The same will apply to the 2nd year.

Eon add to their ever growing reputation of becoming the sneakiest exploiters of marketing tricks. This at the time when Ofgem are
    requesting tariff transparency and simplification.

The 'deferred discount' ploy looks attractive, but it is exactly the opposite, tying customers in and shielding Eon from their own price rises.(exit fee by another name).

I now think the combination of this, their final bill policy of disallowing discounts and the horrendous 'zero spring balance' DD policy make them a non option to the initiated. Of course, that is bad news for all for us as it it reducing choice.

I can see that the OP has now spotted the trick.:)

err... why is the monthly DD £100 if the average monthly usage is £80?

It was an example to indicate that the "free" month was based on average usage not your DD amount. If your average usage is £80 then your DD should be at that obviously, but that doesn't always happen.

I personally always have my DD above ny usage to cater for any unexpected extra usage.

    Hi Retire

Our Your Say customer panel (28k members) told us that they’d like to see a product with a free energy element as well as advice on lowering their energy use.

So, we’re trying something new with our E.ON Energy Fit plan, I’m sorry it’s causing some confusion.

This is a fixed term plan that runs for 24 months, you’ll pay by monthly Direct Debit and we won’t claim any payments on months 12 and 24.

In addition to this, you’ll receive 1 free month of energy per year. We’ll work this out as 1/12th of your annual energy charges for the previous 12 months and credit your account at the end of the year.

You’ll need to register your account online so that we can send your free Energy Fit monitor and give us meter readings each quarter so that we can work out your free month of energy.

You’ll also get a monthly Energy Fit newsletter from us full of advice on how to reduce your energy use as well as information on products and services

This plan is eligible for Tesco Clubcard points and does not offer any additional discounts for payment by Direct Debit or online management.

Hope this clears things up a little, it’s not going to suit everybody of course and if you’re still not sure then a comparison site is always a good idea or just give me shout and I’ll be happy to help.

    Amanda :)
