I have bought PAYG Handset from "dialaphone" in a few occasions and as far as I am aware they are all unlocked, so there is no additional cost for unlocking ?.

How about the Handset bought from e2save.com is unlocked ?

Thanks

If it is unlocked, what 'additional cost for unlocking' are you asking about?

All the handsets they sell (sim-free/contract/PAYG) are almost definitely unlocked.

If your buying the handset alone it would as grumbler has already said, be unlocked.

If you buy it as part of a contract or put in a sim card, it normally becomes locked to that network. If you want to change networks you'd need to pay to unlock the handset. Thats what I've always assumed anyway, my experience on PAYG years back would confirm this.

Contract and PAYG phones sold by CPW/e2save/osps/mobiles.co.uk are normally unlocked unless they say specifically that it is locked. For other retailers it may be not the case as for the phones sold by networks directly.

Thank you for your further info. I have bought quite a few handsets with PAYG sim card (not contract) with other dealers such as "dialaphone", and their mobile phones are always unlocked. Normally with one handset they have various options of the network to choose . What I normally do is that I always choose the cheapest option as I do not really need the SIM card as I always put my own SIM card in it.
So presumably this is also the case with e2save.com. But please correct it if my understand is incorrect.
The reason why I am asking because when I buy I PAYG SIM card with handset, I need to include the cost for unlocking it in which in many cases it will cost me at least £10.00 and the hassle for the need to travel to the place where to unlock it.

I just want to confirm that this information is fully correct based on personal experience. I bought a handset from e2save and it is unlcoked I have tried a few sim card and it works.

It seems that e2save is also part of Carphone warehouse

Grumbler is right for 99% of the time.

However if anthing is exclusive to a set network (be it the phone model or just a set colour) then that may well be locked, but these are few and far between.

I've had locked phones from CPW in the past, but then again I've usually had unlocked from them too. In fact on one occasion they sent me a phone locked to T-Mobile when I took a contract out with Orange. There a logistics error in there but the phone was locked as supplied to me.

It's called boxbreaking in the industry, although usually it refers to doing it on a much larger scale than one or two phones at a time.

It's frowned upon as it means the operators don't get to claw the subsidy back. It's one of the reasons you are forced to buy a top up now when you buy a new PAYG phone so they at least get some of the subsidy back.

Good to know this. Thank you.
It seems there is a new model known with a very cheap contract and offering redemption. They are making profit from expecting people to forget to redeem back in the allocated slot and make it hard to claim the money back. Once you miss that slot you have to pay the full amount

I think this is unsustainable model as the people who miss the redemption slot will get upset and they will use every channel to pass their anger.
