    personally i use boilsoft video joiner, ok its not freeware, but its quick and it doesnt re-encode the files. if cd1 and cd2 are the same framesize and codec, which they should be.
    usually takes about 50sec on my single core, cant remember where i got it from, think it was an offer on one of them 24sites, aka they have a full version piece of software for free, legally, you download and install on the same day.

    +1 for avidemux, we use it regularly in our video and audio restoration business..

    avimerge or mencoder too will work and free..

    Open source software can be very powerful and flexible but this can make it tricky to use initially but it's well worth the effort.....
