Vanquis??

I was discharged in may, Im cleaning up credit files at the moment.
I dont really want anymore credit as the thought of it is scary!
however after reading on here it seems that the only way to improve credit score for the future is to take on a card such as vanquis.
Now as I said I dont intend to ever have credit again but I would like to improve credit score in case I ever need it. Im in my forties and single so have no one to rely on if anything major ever goes wrong ie car problems etc.
After what I have been through in last few years I would never again want to get in the mess I was in, but it would be good to have the option of a small amount of credit in an emergancy.
My question is how likely are vanquis to take on a ex br?
I notice that they are part of the provident group and as they were one of my creditors would that stop them taking me on?
If so what are the other options?
Please understand this is for the future and there is no way I would ever get in to the same mess again, im just looking at options at the moment and would be grateful for peoples thoughts.
Thanks

I do not know whether or not the Provident angle will stop you getting a Vanquis Card.
I applied for one about 12 months ago and have recently had my 3rd limit increase.
If you are on the Electoral role, have an income, have a telephone and possibly an email address then you have a good chance of getting one.
I was less than a year out of discharge when I applied and haven't even cleaned my credit files, so as you can see they will take anyone.
Apply, they can only say NO, but if you are successful you will get a low credit limit. Every 4 months you are given the opportunity to increase this(but you can refuse), provided you have not exceeded your limit and have paid on time.
Good luck with your application.
If you want to improve your score you are going to have to apply sometime, if they refuse try Capital One. They turned me down as they were one of my main creditors £10,000+, so that was expected.0 -
Thanks for your reply. Im just abit worried that if I apply and they turn me down it will make credit file worse? (if thats possible!)
I dont mind a low credit limit as I dont intend to use much,if at all.
Although I realise that to improve my credit score I would have to use and pay off regular.
Also worried that its a bit soon after discharge to apply nearly six months.
Anyone else any experience of them.
Think maybe the fact that provident were one of my creditors would go against me although it as not a large amount.0 -
I applied about 8 months after discharge.
If they turn you down it will have no impact, as far as I am aware is that if you applied for a lot of credit products in a short time (weeks) etc and they all got refused that would have a negative impact. Like I stated I got turned down for Capital One and that was before I applied for Vanquis.
As to the Provident angle you will not know until you apply.
You are going to have start somewhere.
Have you never been turned down for credit before?0 -
Thanks, No never been turned down before. Think you are right, will just have to give it a go. Looks like I have nothing to lose by trying. As you say they can only say no!0

I applied for one 6 months after discharge and was accepted, just had my 1st limit increase. I also applied for a Capital one and was turned down, on my credit file it just shows a search by them, and not the result that they refused me one.:pB&SC No. 298

Thanks, think I will have to bite the bullet and apply. Should I wait a couple of months though to give credit files a chance to update or will it not matter? Ive sent off the letters, but think it can take a while for them to update?0

Think I will give it a try, after all I wont be losing anything if they say no. I think I worry about anything to do with money now.
When I got out my paperwork to do credit clean up all the old sick feelings came back.
However, the worst that can happen is that they say no!
Did you all apply online?0
