Just got off the phone with them and looking at a few things.

They have been taking out £14.04 every quarter and £5.99 every month

Supposedly the 5.99 is for the mobile phone insurance for a mobile which i used to have 3 years ago which was cancelled 2 years ago and they have continued to take this money for 2 extra years.

then just to top it off they have been charging £14.04 every quarter for a technical helpline of some sort. Absolutely seething!!!
  • I've been meaning to check why £3.99 has been being taken from my account for some time, but stupidly kept forgetting!
I decided to check today, and googled the DD name, then found myself on this site. Am pleased it's not just me!! I text CANCEL to 81400 as per an earlier post - within a second, I had a text back confirming the cancellation....thank you :T Now to see if I can get any money back!?!?!?!

I just done the text thing and its cancelled.

I will be writing to both companies showing my displeasure at this farce. Letting them know i will not using their services again.

    Joke!

Same problem, purchased a phone and contract through buymobilephones.net on 10/08/12

Was sure at the time that I had read all available small print and un-ticked anything that was unnecessary (i.e. insurance) but then noticed a debit from my account taken on 04/09/12

Went back through checkout process at buymobilephones.com and I am fairly sure they have changed it and made the insurance more obvious. Different layout now....well maybe anyway.

Received phone and a receipt in the post with no mention of insurance. Also received 2 confirmation emails and looking back, one of them includes the words " Mobile Phone Insurance with 1st Month Free"
but that's the only mention of insurance anywhere.

Did not receive any paperwork or emails relating to the insurance.

Called them on 06/09/12 and told them I had not authorised the DD and a payment had been taken. I was told that paperwork should have been sent by them to me but that maybe there was a problem with my email address....?!!?

In any case, I have now been told that the policy has been cancelled and that the payment will be returned and I will have a letter in the post confirming this.....we will see!

I will also cancel with the bank.

Incidentally, the 'small print' relating to the insurance policy that I eventually found on buymobilephones.com says you have to cancel a policy in writing details in the policy paperwork.

called them on 01983 618300 but it took AGES for them to answer
  • I have had this before and was aware but still let it lapse into paying every month. Then when my phone got damaged I thought I was in luck, as i could at least claim. On looking, there is a £50 excess on most decent phones, and I can get the repair done locally for approx £75 anyway. So beware, even if you think you can claim, it may not be all it's cracked up to be. I also saw elsewhere that they are notoriously difficult to get a claim approved with, ie asking ridiculous questions, asking for lots of paperwork etc. All in all I have cancelled with the text option above (thanks, I did get a text back), and will cancel DD with the bank to be on safe side, and just get my phone repaired locally.
While it is true that not checking your bank statement say once every three to six months leaves you open to this sort of thing, that doesn't make it right. It is still a very low-life scam.
  • Followed the advice here and cancelled via text and DD

I also managed to get a refund for the months payments they had taken from me by emailing them.

I just sent a text to 81400 stating CANCEL and received a text straightaway stating that my cancellation had been confirmed.

I am now going to cancel the DD to be on the safe side.
At least they only caught me twice.
  • What email address was that? I've just noticed a £6.99 charge on my account from these thieves.
  • Did you ask for a refund?
