Best water softener? Granular, tablet or block?

I'm looking at purchasing a non-electric water softener - flow metered (rather than timed), and probably twin tank rather than one, but not essential.

I'm curious if there is much of a difference in salt usage/cost between water softeners that use granular, tablet to block salt.

It seems very hard to find decent advice - every manufacturer's website claims their water softener is the best - I've not seen many independent reviews out there.

There is NO difference in salt consumption between softeners that use the different types of salt - except that block salt costs twice as much as granular/tablets, and machines that use block salt cost twice as much to buy as those that use granular/tablets.
