my new babies

Hi Well last week I told every body how my other half had finally relented and said I could have a kitten. Well tonight they arrived
a beautiful Black boy 16 weeks and a white boy with a black tail about 20 weeks old. I have had them from a small cat rescue home nearby.

The black one is like he is on lsd as he has gone absolutely mad since he arrived and if her ever stays still for a second i will post some pics. The white one has has come down with an eye infection and has been to the vets today and has had an injection and we have tablets for the next 7 days that will be fun trying to get him to eat them any ideas will be gratefully received. Teh lady suggested a lump of cheese.

The lady who brought them said the vet had assured her there was no reason why he should not be brought to us tonight and that he may feel out of sorts for the next few days and lo and behold he has settled under the settee and not showed his face since, he has been there for hours now and i am a bit concerned about him. I took him out from under there to have a cuddle and he just jumped down and went straight back under .

Do you think that this is just because he is upset by the injections, when I saw him in the rescue home he was a live wire like his brother? same dad apparently but different mother.

any way i am also contemplating what to call them . Can i change their names? i really dont like the ones they came with as they dont suit them I want to call the little black one sooty and the white one sweep as he is basically all white except for a black tail and a black spot above his eye like he had been under a chimney when the chimney was swept.

I am so happy tonight but really feel a bit guilty that the little white lad is all alone and hidden away from us all.

Sooty is at this moment trying to type with me as he seems fascinated by the pictures moving on the screen.

Tonight folks, the house feels like a home again.

    Congrats :T

I was hoping for pics though :(

Yes, you can change their names, do it asap though.

The white one may be feeling a little ill, either due to his illness or to the injection or maybe both. Hopefully he'll buck up soon. Most Cats don't like change much either.

As to the food, I haven't owned a kitten for many many years but we used to give ours a thing called Farex (don't even know if they still make it or it's still recommended for cats!).

Cheese in small amounts, like the lady said or something nice and stinky like pilchards (scrape off any tomato sauce first).

    Have fun :D
Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.

Finally have one of sooty he eventually tired himself out now to work out how to post them. but likely to be tomorrow before i can get one of sweep.

Thnakyou for the tip I will let you know how it goes.
  • :j:jThat was quick!:D (saw your posts the other day).

The wee one with the sore eye is really having a bit of a "double whammy" - he will be feeling a bit down with the infection, p*ssed off at being to the vet and then being in a strange place. Don't worry he'll be fine.

I know it's hard but don't "force" the cuddles - they will be naturally curious and in a couple of days will be sneaking up for a look.

The meds makes it a bit harder as you're obviously going to have to handle him straight away mmmmmm if cheese doesn't work, a wee bit of ham may do the trick.

  • Poor little Sweepie. I expect the sudden change coupled with not feeling well is making him retreat to somewhere safe. I'm sure he'll settle in ere long. It took my boy Stanley weeks and weeks before he stopped cowering under the coats by the front door, poor little mite. He's as bold as brass now and tons of fun.

    Roll on the photos!

    Oh yes, piccies, please!

Wonderful news about your new family members, hope they settle in quickly. And lovely to hear you have a black cat, after reading the Black Cat Awareness thread.

I'm afraid I haven't got any advice about an easy way to get a tablet into a kitten, I have enough trouble with my one and not very successfully either – so any tips gratefully received here too!

I wouldn't worry though if he hides under the sofa. It'll be a combination of not feeling well and a strange environment. Give him time to adjust by keeping him in just the one room to let him settle in and explore at his own pace. He'll come out when it's feeding time, or if you have a few treats to entice him!

Congratulations on your two new kitties :T. No problem about changing the names, and as others have said, don't worry about Sweep, he will settle down in his own time, the thing to do is not to force any cuddles on him. It might take him a day, or it might take him a month, but he will settle eventually. ;)

The best way to get tablets down a cat:

Get someone to help you if possible.
Wrap puss in a towel so that his paws, and most importantly, claws, are all covered over, so it is only his head poking out - it is best if the other person holds him (though you can do this yourself if no help available).
Open mouth and put tablet down as far as you can.
Hold mouth closed and put fingers over nostrils for a couple of seconds - I know this sounds cruel, but it makes puss swallow which is vital if you don't want to find the tablet spat out a few moments later.
Rub throat for a few seconds.
Open mouth again to check that tablet has been swallowed.
    Let puss go.
    Easy :rotfl:

You can put the tablet in food such as butter, pilchards or cheese, but if your puss is anything like mine, they will eat around the tablet and leave the actual tablet on the floor.

You could even try grinding the tablet up and putting it in some kind of food, but (again if your cats are like mine) they will (a) not eat the food at all, or (b) only eat some of it, so you don't actually know how much tablet he has consumed or, (c) most likely option - eat the other cat's food :rotfl:

Easy LOL that made me smile! I can understand what you say about covering their nostrils, but what about a cat that holds her breath?

Been there, done that ... Mine's so fussy she won't eat any of the tempting things I might put down for her, or better still refuse to eat anything at all and would rather starve!

If you briefly cover their nostrils, they are subconsciously forced into swallowing. So as long as you have put the tablet in far enough (at the back of the throat), gravity will take its course. I find this is the most effective way of making sure that the cat has actually taken the whole of the tablet they were meant to - and have the scars to prove it :rotfl:
