My ageing desktop is just about ready for the knackers yard and i`m thinking of replacing it.

I only need a base unit as everything else is good and looking around i`ve found this http://www.dabs.com/products/hp-500b-micro-tower-pentium-e5800-2gb-500gb-dvd---rw-windows-7-professional---64-bit-7M4B.html

It will be primarily used for the web, photos & music so doesn`t really need to be high spec but obviously i would like to get a good deal for my money and be able to use it for watching telly over the web.

What are everyones opinions on this?

I`m guessing that it won`t run office XP which i use occasionally but i`m not sure as i don`t know that much about these things.

It says the version of windows is 64 bit but will older programs run in compatibility mode or am i being a bit hopeful?

    Advice would be much appreciated.

How would you expect to do this? Do you plan to buy a TV Card?

Usually the choice is for an internal option, such as this Dual Tuner PCI-Express TV tuner for Microsoft Media Center. or an external option via USB.
The option to which I have linked uses the PCI Express slot, so if you wished to upgrade the graphics card, you would need the PCI Express slot for that.
Is that case you would need to get a TV PCI or USB card.

Even though the PC to which you linked gives you the appearance of being able to watch TV via the PC, you would not be able to do so without a TV card being fitted.

Keep that in mind. See here

most terrestrial tv channels are available (streamed) online live or on demand, no tv card required.

True enough...though I imagined that he chose the HP for it's Media Centre function.
Perhaps not...we'll find out soon enough.

Have you cleaned the insides of the PC, including the RAM contacts(with a pencil eraser) and made sure that everything is properly seated?
Have you tried running it without the Zone Alarm software and whilst running Windows XP SP3?

I gave it a good clean inside a couple of months ago, i haven`t taken out and replaced anything though. It may be time for me to do this.

SP is currently being downloaded, the machine is mostly at its default settings as its difficult to do much with it atm.

I just ran a boot scan with Avast and the only thing that it found was a corrupt file that has been stored for years on the second HDD and not used so i`ve deleted that, other than that everything seems ok.

Is there any software that you know of that can detect hardware errors or am i just being too hopeful?:D

Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure That way you will have the time to write down the Error Codes if it happens again.

How much RAM is installed to your machine?
