I'm thinking of getting a new tv after christmas. Now the one like the look of is available from John Lewis (with a Free 5 year guarantee) , and I was wondering what are John Lewis good with their guarantees?

I wouldn't go anywhere else. The service and after sales care is second to none.

Yes, yes, yes! We had a Toshiba TV that went wrong when it was 3 years old, and when we googled it it was a well-known fault with both that TV and some Sony ones too. We contacted Toshiba and in no uncertain terms they told us to b*gger off as it was outside of the guaranty period. We contacted John Lewis who said that as it was a known-fault and the replacement parts were no longer available as so many TVs had already been repaired with this fault that we could choose another TV. They told us how much a TV with those features is worth now and we were able to choose any TV up to that value, or even better go for one that is slightly more expensive and pay the difference which meant we also got a brand new 5 year John Lewis guarantee with it. Superb service.

Likewise - service is great, never needed the after sales care !

When I was looking for a TV, not only did the staff know what they were talking about. When I asked to see an SD picture on each of the HD TVs I was considering they got a length of aerial lead and connected each one up as I wanted - every other store I tried said that "it wasn't possible" !

Are you talking about a John Lewis branded TV, or a TV from John Lewis? 2 totally different things.
You can get a 5 year warranty on the same product (unless it's a JL branded) one at Richer Sounds, probably for less.
JL branded TV's can be from absolutely any supplier, so not recommended at all, spares and repairs are next to impossible usually. Buy a known brand (LG, Samsung, Sony, Panny etc) whether from them or elsewhere.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I will also recommend John Lewis for buying electricals although pricy compared to other the service and warranty levels they throw in are second to none.

You can also get a 5yr warranty from M&S and usually cheaper and I can vouch for an extremely good after sales service from them.
I have a Sony in the kitchen and the bedroom, both from Richer sounds and a Sony in the lounge from M&S. All with 5yr warranty.

    John Lewis every time.

We bought a TV for my OH's gran and four years later it stopped working - we had left the guarantee with her but she had then "tidied it away" and couldn't find it so we hadn't anything to prove purchase or warranty.

I called them and they found the details on their system, printed duplicates and posted them to me and arranged an engineer to call.

TV repaired within 3 days of calling - very happy.
