EU referendum

I have very big suspicions of these government referenda with regards the outcomes. I just don't, and never have, trusted politicians. We're not going to get one about the united states of Europe anyway as the politicians know exactly what the result will be unless it were "massaged"!
I would still vote no, there was nothing wrong with the organisations we were party to then, EFTA etc.

As far as I know no country has ever left the EU so it's impossible to work out the ramifications. I would expect the rest of EU would be very hostile with any country that left, especially one like the UK which is a net contributor. I Think a lot of trade links would get shutdown. We can't say we want to leave and become like Switzerland, I don't think that would be politically possible.0

Nothing to do with fear, It's being realistic. It's like asking for a friendly divorce from your wife. You still expect to shag her but not pay any maintenance. It's not going to happen!0

Yes, I'm sure the likes of Volkswagen, Renault and Bosch would be so furious they'd refuse to sell us their products. Meanwhile, EDF and Telefonica et al would be so desperate to get out of our tainted market they'd sell us back their assets at a knockdown price, rather than soil their hands with our filthy money.
We heard this argument last time. It was total nonsense then.0 -
Let us just leave and deal with the consequences......I doubt they'd be that severe.0

Addendum. I favour democracy. The EU as it is is the complete antithesis of democracy. Does the forum not agree?0

Remember you can't just count the trade with Europe, you also have include the other trade because we are in Europe. Personally I don't think it's worth the risk, it could seriously screw things up. It's not like we could then say sorry, let us back in. The damage would have already have been done.
If we really want to be financially better off, then we should stay in Europe but say bye bye to Scotland , Wales and Nothern Ireland, they cost us far more than being in Europe. While we are at it lets split away from the benefit scroungers of the north.0 -

I'd like to see some (trustworthy) figures proving that the Celtic fringe costs us more than EU membership.
Either way, the pusillanimity of putting up with an entirely non-democratic rule by a self-perpetuating oligarchy because you are too scared of what might happen if we left is pathetic.
Thank God the majority didn't feel like that back in the 1930s!
There is a big world out there to trade with and the EU is growing more sclerotic and less important by the day.0 -

I trust that is a tongue in cheek remark.
Whilst there no doubt some benefits to being associated with Europe but it costs us massively.
On the basis that a good part of Europe ex the likes of Norway are up the creek and their paddles are rotting.
The far east has its own problems but for the foreseeable future it has got a lot more opportunities for us and them.
