Student books

Options
I am having trouble finding sites to buy students books off. I am in constant need of books and i dont like buying them new, in my first semester i spent around £150 on books which wont have any return until i sell them off end of year for probably half the price.

I need to buy second hand books so by the time i am done with them i can just sell them off and make around the same money as i have paid for them.

Is there a website where i can sell or buy my books off other uni students like myself.

I found the uni noticeboards were a great place to advertise wanted and for sale books. If you put them all over your department, you are guaranteed to reach the right audience.

Also, does your department have an online forum? I know ours did and that was also a good place to request and sell books.

unique ill try as u said and i think there is a book fair or somethin alike but the first one was too early i wasnt sure of which books to get and too late for first semester as i had allready bought them

We do not have a forum, :( we do have WEBCT which is alike a forum but its for first years and for specific courses so everyone on there is on the same boat...

Ill try froogle but amazon have fair prices and they are my last option...

Thanks for the replys so far but i was wondering if there was any websites just made for this...I think its a good idea for a business now LOL

    Hello,
I can't believe you spent that much on books in your first semester! I've bought a total of three books for mine. I think the whole idea of book buying in the first year is ridiculous. I have 12 different modules each year and buying the core texts for all of those would be insane. Especially as you just use some for one essay. Even if I did sell them on afterwards it would be at a huge loss.

My best advice is just buy the books that you might want to keep. Otherwise use the library and online sources, lots of books these days are available free as electronic copies. If you do have to buy them try charity shops or small town bookstores, they're great. Also closing down bookstores are awesome. Went to one the other day and every single book was down to £2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Anyway, good luck with things.
    Frazer.
  • my university has set up a scheme where you post what book you are selling and people can look to see if there are books that they want and with it being inside our university you meet the people and pay them. its a really good idea to be honest and the books are very cheap indeed.

and i hate the fact most of the books that i have bought have relation back to the uni itself...and some books which are ment to be easy to read and very useful...I aint even opened....Organisational Behavior ...i didnt use the book to date and paid 30 or 40 for it....

Bought 2 books now for 40 when one book was 48 and the other 30 ....very pleased with that because when i sell it off i can make about the same back...Im being forced to buy some books, i bought Context in business which was needed for every seminar, actually a very nice book but i dont think i will keep it and i paid around 40+ for it....

Books are really just sucking up money as well as travel...i spend less on food LOL!!!!!!!

I always use amazon market place, and sometimes you would be amazed what books they have.
Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam
  • abe books are good for second hand books. They'll also give you a good description of the quality of the book - whether pages have been highlighted etc - this will reflect in the price. Ive bought several uni books from this site and been satisfied.
  • Here are a couple you may want to try,

    here :

    http://www.academicbooktrade.co.uk/

    and here:

    http://www.greenmetropolis.com/

At green metropolis all books are priced @ £3.75 and you can sell books on there too.
  • Abebooks.co.uk ... or maybe it's dot com.

My sociology teacher suggested that one. Not sure how good it is though.

I get most of mine from ebay. I bought a book that is £25 in Waterstones, for £7 including p&p! Bargainous.

Buying books is the biggest pain in the !!!!. I feel your pain - I do English Literature! Three books a week = havoc for my bank balance.
