Some cars, like Audi's will keep the boot locked if someone broke in and unlocked the central locking trying to get the locking wheel nut out of the boot.
It amazes me how may people don't carry their locking wheel nut.
Back to the OP though - you could have a look around to see if there was any CCTV that will show your car hobbling into the side street and you getting out to look at the flat tyre.
You should have stayed with the car really.
