  • 0r £13.33 a week - for now or £14 in January should Gideon have his way.;)

Edit: - Very kind boss shifts one of his old nails? Check out the VED and Insurance too, probably cheaper to have a taxi.

Another thing to consider OP. Depending on the year, I wouldn't pay no more then £1,500 for a mint mondeo as it's a buyers market. Make sure the cambelt was changed, had a recent service, and that it has decent ammount of tax and M.O.T left on it otherwise something you thought was cheap enough, will cost you an extra £500 at the end of the year on the the things I've mentioned alone. (general wear and tear excluded.)

The official "urban/city" figure is 25.7 miles per gallon, which in reality translates to around 23 miles per gallon. (assuming it's a 1.8 petrol with a manual gearbox driven in city conditions.)

    23 miles x 13 gallons (60 litres) = 300 miles to the tank. 60 litres x £1.38 = £82.80p per tank.

    where do you live???
  • Hi OP

at the moment we have a 1.0 corsa that is classed as our work car we do 6 miles a day mon-thurs 26 miles on a friday and 20 miles on a sunday. costs us £15 pw in petrol. 6x4 + 26 + 20 = 70 miles or 21p per mile
we have a 2.5 v6 cougar, cheap stop gap car while my mondeo tdci is gettiing fixed, we get 60 miles to £15 or 25p per mile

the mondeo i used to travel 60miles a day to work and back mainly m-way and shopping at weekends ect cost us £60 pw 60x5 + 50 = 350 or 17p per mile

tbh just buy it if its cheap enough, walk if its sunny if you need to save fuel, drive if you dont or the weather is rubbish. cant go wrong with a mondeo loads out there and cheap parts if it goes wrong.

that almost makes me feel alright about paying £15 a day to get to work (roughly 70 mile round trip)
  • I would love to get rid of one of the cars but we live in a village with a practically no busses or public transport.

and starting work @ 5:30am most mornings dont fancy bikeing or walking on rural dark 60mph roads in the winter. our little one has to get to school which is in the nearest town againe no bus

short trips always kills the mpg
  • The minuscule mileage makes the whole process of calculating the cost and comparing to alternatives futile. It will cost pennies.

If you are asking about the couple of quid fuel the car will cost I suggest you really can't afford to run a car! Have you got a quote for insurance?

I agree with the cycle option - it's the easiest and best way to travel short distances. A 5 min drive or a 20 min walk you say... that's 10 mins on a bike. Not even long enough to break a sweat. Wind and rain don't bother you if you have decent clothes on! Save the cash for something more fun.

Sorry about that. I was qouting premium fuel prices as that's what I always use. Consider it the highest price the OP will pay anywhere in the U.K :) But to work that out again for the sake of correction:

    23 miles x 13 gallons (60 litres) = 300 miles to the tank. 60 litres x £1.32? = £79.20 per tank.

Thanks to most of your helpful replies. Glasgowdan i suggest that you know nothing about my life and have no right to "suggest" anything about me. The fact that i am curious to what my fuel spend will be on a certain car is a key element of budgeting finances before jumping into something, it doesnt mean i cant afford to run a car and i am offended you would "suggest" this.

To clear things up for others, heres the situation. My boss is a mechanic, with a bodyshop and MOT centre. He also owns a sales garage which family run for him. All cars that he takes for the sales garage go into the bodyshop first for any repairs it may need and a full service and new MOT.
Hes selling me the car for £1200, insurance is £70pm (my last car was £120pm) the care will be in my name and insured in my name. I dont think there is a law against one person lending money to another without a licence. hope not or my nan will be in big trouble :rotfl:

The fact that buses, cycles and taxis would be cheaper is irrelevant.
Stagecoach do a weekly ticket that gives you unlimited travel around all of south wales for £21.50
Factor in ANYONES tax, insurance, fuel, and cost of car and cant see it being cheaper than that. So yes, i can get the bus cheaper, but i dont want to, i need a car for my own personal reasons like im sure every driver on the road does!
Supermanjo thank you so much for your breakdown, really helpful :)
So i think ive had my post answered so thanks everyone who had some useful advice!
edit; would also like to add that i didnt spend in the region of £500 learning to drive to end up on a bike or a taxi! :)

Wow thats a reply, would have been good to have put some of those facts in to the Op and then you wouldnt have got some of the questions.

Is the car worth £1200, doesnt seem your boss is being that kind
