Pleased to report that Vodafone have credited my wife's account with all data charges incurred during the period we were having the problem as a 'gesture of goodwill'.

While we are obviously delighted to accept this and appreciate Heidi's intervention I think as it is fair to say we believe there is a lesson to be learned for Vodafone. They must understand that some customers choose not to take a data bundle because they do not intend to use the internet often and therefore, do not expect to see daily data charges appearing halfway through a contract.

For these customers they must either:

    1. Build into the tariff a small but sufficient data allowance that will cope with the phone making silent connections to the internet to receive or download updates.

    2. Or, they must make it absolutely clear to customers who are starting a contract without a data allowance that there is a chance that their phone may connect to the internet which would incur them charges. They should then offer them a small data allowance for a nominal monthly fee which would cover them for receiving updates.

    3. Or, finally, they disable internet connections and/or updates as a default for customers taking a contract without a data allowance and advise them that the phone will not be able to connect to the internet unless it is enabled and that when doing this, a data bundle is advisable.

It is not rocket science, so come on Vodafone, sort it out!
  • My 11 year old son has been receiving WAP charges at midnight since the 12th of April, each for 0.833p, I contacted Vodafone who have basically blamed a third party app for these charges though a lot of discussions on various forums state it is Vodafone who send the updates, I am £51.00 out of pocket.....Vodafone HAVE decided to refund me £15.00!?!? Do I stand any chance of receiving the rest of the charges back??:mad::mad:

Updates of what? You're not explaning much, and have revived an old thread that might not specifically relate to your problem.

I had that on an old Nokia. It was not a smartphone and started the day after I used Data for the first time to check the Trainline one day.

The Vodafone shop confirmed that there were no apps or updates running on my handset and it appeared that Vodafone seemed to be landing me with a data transmission at about midnight or early morning.

I got them to remove data from my account and credit me back with the charges.
