Sat Nav

Hello

I want to buy my OH a satnav for his birthday. I have been told Garmin are the best.

Which would you recommend.

We will not be driving in Europe (well no plans to at the min). I don't know much about them so not sure what i want lol. About £100 - £150.

Thanks

If you don't need european maps I'd recommend the Garmin Nuvi 1300T, it has UK and Ireland maps, 'lane assistance', traffic reports, and a decent 4.3 inch widescreen display. Currently reduced in Halfords at £110.

If you want to cover the possibility of european driving the 1390T will do that, currently £119 at amazon, a no brainer for an extra 9 quid

    Hope this helps

I have a Garmin Nuvi and it is perfectly fine, has an occasional freak but is generally reliable. However it is not a patch on the TomTom go live 1005 that a couple of collegues have, although the Go lives are twice the price or more of the prices quoted by AirCooledHeaven.

Comet have the Tom Tom Go 750 Live with 12 months updates at £155

Lane guidance is useful on unfamiliar roads

Look for a bean bag dashboard mount to avoid marks on the windscreen

Have bought from here before, and they have price match

Im a massive TOM TOM fan, Garmin are great but iv found myself turning off before on unfamiliar roads then mid way the sat nav having a fit. Happened a few times to be honest, i feel you should go in Halfords if your still indecisive and get hands on with them all, the assistants will get them out and let you have a go. After all im sure you'l feel more comfortable after playing with them yourself so you know if its right for your OH.

There is no BEST, lets get that straight, depending on your budget and needs will dicate which is best for your hubby, satnavs do a lot more than get people from A-B nowadays, and dependant on where he may commute, live travel updates can be more useful than just the getting from A-B, I have a Tomtom, but unlike the poster above, disagree that it is simply the best! as I understand when you go on holiday, chances are the captain of the plane is using Garmin to assist with their navigation.
Satnavs can also now connect to the internet via a mobile phone or a built in sim card to offer further points of interests and live fuel prices / parking spaces nearby etc etc oh, and can double up as a hands free unit. But if you are on a real tight budget, then you can get perfectly adequate devices from under £50 if you don't want the additional features.

I suppose it is a matter of opinion, and tom tom has never failed to impress me as of yet so its my top choice. However i do believe there is some problems out there but i still yet to over come them.

I personally like tomtom, I have used tomtom one and tomtom one xl...

Perhaps he has a mobile phone such as an iphone/adroid etc that can run sat nav software? would be abit cheaper than buying a whole sat nav and they work well, in my opinion

Sat nav on a phone is great till someone calls you just when you need the navigation screen LOL I have a Tom Tom which I bought in a hurry when my car was written off (it had Smartnav and a bluetooth phone kit) I needed something to do both hands free and navigation in the hire car I had till my new car was ready. I think it's a Tom Tom Live never really used the Live bit it needs too much messing around with I prefer to have it easy to remove and no tell tale signs on the window.

Google Navigation on Android phones has come a long way since it was first released. I use it daily and think it's great. The main drawback of google navigation is the need to have a mobile data plan. It does Cache your route if you set it up before you leave the house and have a wifi connection, but I find it still complains if I lose signal. Might also work out cheaper due to not having to pay out for map updates.

Check your car windscreen before purchasing.

I have a scenic and he screen has metal bits in and my satnav does not work because of it.
    (works fine in other cars).

I need to buy one that needs an external aerial.
