I love reading, and I love gadgets, but so far I don't have a kindle. Now the price has come down I'm considering it again. Now, I think one of the pleasures of reading is the tactile experience of holding a book in your hand and turning the pages, so can one really get the full reading experience from a kindle??

In my experience, echoed by 3 or 4 other people I know who have one, you start reading a book on it you soon forget you are holding a kindle - you're just reading an interesting book.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0

Just pointing out but you must have missed the post already at the top of this board:

Thanks, but I'm not so worried about the mechanics of finding, buying, and loading books, what I'm really after is to understand the kindle reading experience compared to a real book, can't help thinking that i'll be disappointed...0 -

Be interested to find out as well what others think, have used several android pads with different e-reader apps, don't like them at all.
But never used a dedicated e-reader, so may be different. So yeah be good to find out.
I too like the books, the smell of a new book, if it a cheapish book, cracking the spine, folding the corners over.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
I have a Kindle 3 (keyboard) and my Father in Law just bought one of the new £89 ones.
I helped get him set up and working, first impressions are that the new one is not as substantial feeling as the K3, screen is exactly teh same and it seems to have lost the 'Black Flash' when turning pages.
The side buttons are smaller and actually are harder to use as the reduced size means that they no longer naturally sit by your thumbs.
As a dedictaed e-reader, you cant go far wrong and just a little bit of legwork will open up whole libraries to you - I am currently working through my free library of over 3k books! Still jump on to Amazon now and again though for new authors or releases.0 -
I've had my Kindle for over a year and I use it all the time... Just like reading a paper book, only lighter (and then when you *do* read a paper one after months of using a Kindle, you'll probably press the side of the page then stare dumbly wondering why the page isn't turning :rotfl: )
I've also got reader apps on my other toys, but I'd only ever use them in an emergency situation! E-ink rules for reading books, battery lasts for yonks (I get about 40 hours reading time on mine though it's the keyboard one and I think the new version has a shorter battery life) and obviously you can read in bright sunshine with no glare
Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
I have a kindle and at first worried about the same thing as yourself, I have the cover with light. TBH I completely forget I'm holding a kindle rather than a book, it didn't take long to get used to it.0

I have a kindle and I love books, When we lost our home I had over 2 thousands books that I sold and my husband suggested getting a kindle so that I can still read.
I hated the idea as I love the feel of books and turning the page etc...but I have found the Kindle is great, the screen is almost like ink so very easy to read and holding it is just like holding a softback with the cover bent over.
I have found however that I turn the page by accident as I forget the turner is on the side.
I love mine and so far have nothing but free books which is saving a fortune with the amount I can read.
I am reading Crime and punishment and war and peace and both are holding up to this new modern medium.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will.

I have kindle 3 and love it.....it now seems strange when I try to read a paperback. I also have hundreds of books waiting to be read, all free. When you factor in that you can download the Guardian newspaper for free, and get loads of free books you can actually save money with a kindle :-)0
