I work for a very large company and we get plenty of treats throughout the year. However Christmas is a bit odd. No one seems to want a christmas do.

On the positive side, we do get a bonus £1K in our pay packets, which more than makes up for it.

However in other places I have worked are so tight it beggers belief. My boss was so tight he wouldn't buy his own staff a round, and was purposely last out the taxi so someone else would get the drinks in. When it was his round, he had water.

I have a similar set up. The whole business closes at 12 and the company pays for a meal and drinks till.....well, basically last man standing.

Thing is I hate these sort of things, hate Xmas too so last year I took a day off to avoid it. Can't do it this year so have been told I go or lose a half days pay?

Can they do that? The business is closed, I can't stay in the buillding so have no option but go home and lose money.

I get well !!!!!! off with people at our place if they do not attend the do which is at no cost whatsoever to them, all they have to do is eat/ drink & chat with their colleagues before we have our annual winter shutdown for 2 weeks, also usually including a substantial performance related bonus of anywhere between £500 & £1000.
I just find it downright rude to the owners of our Company and also to their fellow employees

Are they invited to attend or do they HAVE to?

I don't think it's rude not to attend, they may not like their colleagues or otherwise socialise with them. Just turning up because it's free doesn't seem right to me.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

I find it downright rude to pressure people to attend a social event if they don't want to.

Whilst I'm sure a lot of people enjoy this type of "do" there are a very significant number who do not. What makes it worse is that often they feel unable to admit that because of the very attitude you have just displayed.
