I have no strong opinions on NIMBYs as long as they keep well away from where I live.
  • Maybe we need to restrict population growth rather than covering the countryside with concrete?

I quite agree, as much as I truly believe that immigration in the UK over the centurys has enriched us, enough is enough, it has moved too much too fast.
The fact is we have now allowed millions into the UK in the last few years, it's now too late to do anything.
So where do we house all these people?

I don't want to see countryside destroyed, and I don't think it has to be that way with some creative commonsense design and thought, but the fact is that we have to do something. 10% of UK is built on, another 0.5% is going to make very little difference and will more than solve all of our problems, and then we draw a line in the sand and say enough immigration for now.

There is some pretty strong evidence that you have internet access.

Hardly an ecological choice to import food that we are more than capable of producing ourselves.

True, but I do see a lot of farmland that is not being used to grow food.

If we are going to use our farmland for food, lets do it.

If we build on farmland then where do we grow our food?

My point is we build on the hard to use land.

Can you give examples of farmland being wasted? There are times when maybe the casual passer by would think our fields are 'idle,' but they're like that before & after hay harvest, for a bit.

Land can be used more intensively, but to do that requires a greater input of capital, and I'd guess that will happen more & more in the UK as food prices increase. No one's going to do it for fun.

Right now, I can only think of equestrian as being a 'waste' of good farm land. Horse is tasty though, so I'm told. ;)

Where I am most of farmland is not used to grow food but has been given over to livery and this is in the Southeast where the houses are needed.

But as has been said before that is either flood plan which is normally used for livestock or upland farms where there is less demand for property.
